Canon EOS 40D ERR99

Hey guys, I've been using this 40D for like almost 2 years and never had anything problems with it until today, I keep getting this ERR99 and asking me to reinsert my battery! What has gone wrong?

I took approximately only 13,000-14,000 shots with it. I tried reinserting both my batteries from my battery grip, reformatted my CF card and cleaned all of my lenses and body contacts but it's still showing that error after a few shots....

Help please... is it time for me to move on for a new body or what?

Err99 is a general error but it often means that the shutter needs to be replaced. That's been the case with other Canon bodies I've had that have had this error, including a 40D. You will probably be able to hear that it sounds different, ie it's not cocking the shutter properly. Send it in to Canon for a quote.

I had an Err99 for my flash problem...unfortunately Canon use it for just a bout anything that can go wrong...have you tried a new battery in it?

Yes, it does make that funny sound.. how much is the repair for the shutter?

If it's too much, maybe I should move on for 7d or 60d...

i saw a 40d with this error (not sure if it was a shutter issue or something else) sell for $100 a few days ago.
Might be worth getting a quote to see what it will cost to fix.

Definitely find out the problem first before you sell cheap. My err99 message was a problem with the diaphram of a particular lens, there was nothing wrong with the camera at all.

Will I be able to get around $200ish for selling it?

It will probably vary depending on what the repair quote comes back saying. if it is really expensive you can just put it on ebay and see what you get.

I had this on my 400D about 2 years ago and found it was the catch on the battery grip door a little loose. A few firm taps on the locking cam with a screwdriver handle fixed it.

I've had a shutter replaced on a Canon 40D previously (following an Err99) and, from memory, it cost $435.

Even though your 40D is two years old, assuming you are its original owner and it was bought as Aussie stock, then I think you'd have a fair chance of getting it repaired by Canon Australia for free. Under Australian statutory laws, a camera has to be 'fit for purpose' and 2 years / 14k actuations wouldn't meet that definition in most people's books (ie that's in addition to 12 month manufacturer's warranty).
