I found this recently after seeing CHDK (http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/CHDK) and wondering if there was anything similar for DSLR cameras. It's an open source firmware which runs along side the canon firmware of a camera (not every model is supported). It adds a separate menu to your camera where you can program your exposures (longer than 30s), program an intervalometer and program hdr shots in excess of 3 exposures. It also has a fair few video recording enhancements and other cool stuff. (I can now film with my 50D :efelant:)
I thought I'd share this for anyone who hasn't seen it. It's not the most user friendly but it didn't take me too long to get the hang of it. It also saved me a good $100 on an external intervalometer too :D

Also, hi all - haven't been on here in over a year! I'll try and be more active from now on :o
