View Full Version : Crrumbin rocks sunrise - sunday 15th jan
i am going to be on the Gold Coast this weekend with famliy - I will be going to do my first sunrise in ages at Currumbin if anyone would like to join me. It WILL mean an early rise out of bed because you need to be there and set up a good half hour before sunrise. I will post details later if anyone is interested in being as crazy as me to get up so early on a Sunday Might be a decent place open for coffee/breakfast afterwards. I hope so. Cheers: David

It'll be full low tide David , Trust me , I've been every morning this week , Plenty of green stuff around the rocks , And if the cloud plays the game you should be right , PS : All the sand has gone as well :D
Thanks William, yep low tide at 7am (ish), looks like sunrise is about 5 02 am with first light about 30-40 minutes earlier, so I reckon I'll be there about 4 30ish. Chance of rain at Currumbin is about 90% tomorrow so it might be wet. I'll park at the carpark on the corner near Currumbin Rock.

Thanks David, if it is not raining when I wake up I will be there :th3:
Hey guys; I will be at the carpark at duringan st around the bend from pacific parade at 4am - at 4.15 we will wander down the beach to the point and set up at the rocks for the pre dawn set up. If you come late just go to the beach and and go left along the shore to the rocks, you cant miss them. Weather may be WET so bring something to protect your camera from rain and take a chance: I am looking forward to catching up with familiar faces. IF you get lost call me on 0479 047 670 and I will try to help. See you there guys and gals. David.
well rain on awakening but trotted out anyway, met up with Odille and David and had a reasonably productive morning as the rain stayed away.
With the sand gone and low tide I had the opportunity to investigate areas of the rock shelf I'd not visited before.
Andrew you missed a good morning, only about another 6 togs out, one of whom got a drenching, clothes, camera ,bag, the lot. Just goes to show that even at low tide those freak waves can catch you out.

That was me unfortunately mate.. Bag didn't get touched as it was over on dry ground but everything else including me definitely got drenched. Unfortunately I only upgraded to my 5dmk2 just 2 weeks ago and it is now completely stuff.. today I handed it to Canon and it's on it's way to Sydney to see if there is any chance of saving it.. it's been in a huge bowl full of rice to hopefully get as much of the water out as possible and now fingers crossed the repair guys in Sydney might be able to salvage it. Definitely not expecting anything but a negative phone call in the next few days though.

Lovely work Jam, good colour and rays and I like the one with the bird as a focal point. I do hope your camera is salvageable, you took a hell of a drenching. Did you know you can get camera raincoats on eBay, they are not totally waterproof but as it is the back end that is open I believe it might have saved you camera from a lot of damage. The ones I have in mind have a drawstring at the front and are clear plastic sort of L shaped, about $10 for 2 from memory. I recommend 'em, one saved me at Burleigh one time when a huge thunderstorm came through. The camera was nice and dry and I was soaked.

 :( Shite , Thats not good news Jamie , I do remember telling you that Andrew would be down there with his new Underwater camera , You were asking about a price for a water housing for the 5Dmk11 :Doh:Looks like we stick to the old cars for a while yet , But I hope it all turns out for you , I have a spare 350D you can use if needed , Better than nothing :( - Bill

Thanks Analog. I really hope it's salvageable but the chances are EXTREMELY slim. I won't find out til next week and by then the salt will have eroded the entire interior of the camera.. devastated. I have only now just thought about the raincoats.. (funny how it takes something like this disaster to think about protecting the camera) and will definitely invest in one for the future.

Not good news at all mate. Yeah I remember that but I didn't receive your message until after the actual morning that everyone was there so I missed out :(. Thanks Bill i'll let you guys know how It all goes!
- mATE IVE DONE THE SAME THING WITH CAMERAS AND LENSES BEFORE AT SEASCAPES,,NEW CAMERA A CANON L SERIES LENSES - TWICE - Fortunately I learnt from the first disaster and got INSURANCE that covers me for theft, loss, accidental damage, stupidity, the lot. Please get insurance cover for ALL your camera gear - a 5dm2 and deent lenses alone in thousands of dollars down the pooper if you mess up and landscape togs are the worst for exposing gear to the elements ..sea water is usually fatal unless the body is water proofed like my 1d II and even then any protection you can get is worthwhile... I saw your incident anf felt for you straight away - its a terrible thing. My Suncorp Insurance protects my butt from further tragety.
