I must admit my total lack of knowledge when it comes to flash units. I am considering buying a flash to use with my nikon D40. I plan to use it for portraiture/general indoor photography. I would also like to play around with using a flash to help bring out foreground detail in landscape photography. Would be nice to be able to fire the flash off the body too if possible. I may buy a D5100 or D7000 in the near future. I also have no problems buying third party. Any recommendations? Fire away (pardon the pun).

Agreed. If you have an issue with 3rd party, I wouldn't waste my time with the SB400, and the 900 is going to be bigger and cost more than your camera..

I thought there were "no" issues with 3rd Party.

I have a Nissin Di622 Mk II which is about $170 off fleabay. Works under Nikon Commander system as a slave and also built in optical slave. Only thing it doesn't have is high speed sync. The bigger Nissin Di866 does that plus works as a controller for Nikon Commander system for around $100 more.

I have 2 Nissin flashes - excellent.

helps to read properly. sigma make a good range of flashes that would suit your needs too.

Oops... in that case I can recommend getting 3 x small yongnuos yn465s (probably around $60 each) and some Cactus triggers or the like (x4) and for less than the cost of a SB700, you have a great portraiture kit, with probably some money left over for stands and/or modifiers.

Thanks for the advice, so many choices out there. Maybe the yongnuo's are the way to go......they sound like excellent value.
