View Full Version : I'm Sooo Excited!
I have just booked a ticket on board the spectator vessel to watch the start of the Sydney to Hobart and it is the only boat allowed in the exclusion zone and I have almost finished organising my trip to Hobart to watch the fleet arrive at Constitution Dock with my husband on board a Beneteau 45 called BALANCE. It's his first Hobart and I've never been to Tasmania before so after the festivities in Hobart including watching the fireworks sitting on board the boat with a few beverages, we are hiring a car and driving around the East Coast (mainly) of Tassie for 6 days before flying out of Launceston. I can't wait! Hoping to practise a bit of street photography, fireworks photos and some landscape stuff. Also going on boat trip out to the seal colonies so hoping to get some awesome seal shots! I'm taking all my gear and will probably drive my husband mad wanting to stop for photos all the time!! Are there any recommendations for places to stay around the Wineglass Bay area (not too expensive!) or suggestions from locals of what best to do and see in the area apart from the obvious. There is so much info out there on the net it is hard to choose. We are up for hiking, off road driving (not too rugged as we will have basic hire 4x4) or whatever is suggested! I'm sure that I'll have a ton of photos to share when I get back!:):):D

Sounds like a great experience coming up.
We spent 6 days in/on (?) the apple isle in June 2010 & went up the east coast for most of that.
We stayed at Bicheno for a couple of nights, and travelled down to Coles Bay, then did the walk in to Wineglass Bay. We walked in via the saddle & came out via hazards bay, great scenery. There's plenty of accommodation at Coles Bay which looked quite nice.
We also stayed at St Helens whilst having a brief look at the Bay of Fires.
Are you sure you'll need a 4x4, I would doubt you'll need one if you're only there for 6 days

If you're getting close to the seal colonies, take a peg to put on your nose.
They REALLY stink!
Enjoy the trip. Sounds like you'll have a real blast.

Good on ya ktoopi. You'll have a ball. Are you going with photography in mind, or just the experience? Either way have a great time. :th3:

Before we got in to Bushwalking it was 4 wheel driving for me as well, but 6 days on the east coast, I wouldn't bother, and it'll make a big difference to the car hire price
I wouldn't bother with a 4WD either.............and anywhere in Tassie is picturesque I found.
Good luck, have fun and don't forget to breathe once in a while

Enjoy and be prepared to get up in the middle of the night for the arrival of the first yacht. Its amazing being down there if it comes in at say 3.00am, mainly cause the crowd just appears and its kinda surreal.
You will love the rest of Tassie too

Extra batteries and cards, Tassie is a photographers paradise and throw in the yatch race as well, no wonder you are just a tad excited. Have a great time :D
