I'm sure one of you experts out there would know the answer to my question.
I have a Nikon D80
Is it possible to fire the SB600 speedlite flash of camera, but NOT firing the cameras built in flash?

With a D60 the built in flash doesn't shoot (check your manual though as it should be in there, perhaps under Speedlight?).
John, the D80 supports the Nikon CLS flash control and by the very nature of that the built in flash must transmit light pulses to "talk" to the external flash during the triggering process.
The amount of actual light put out by the inbuilt flash during that period that it is talking to the remote flash shouldn't register in the exposure.
In the camera custom setting menu at #22 there is an option to set the inbuilt flash to commander mode and then to select the built in flash to (TTL, M, --)and the -- symbol means no flash out put.
