I need to purchase a new digital compact for the miss's "happy snaps". It should be of reasonably good picture quality, but also light, and compact. I am hoping to kill two birds with one stone, by getting one which also serves as a great light meter.

Any suggestions of a good model?

I bought my wife a Nikon compact..we are very under-impressed with it, the shutter lag is woeful ....id look at a canon G12 next time { or something like it}....if you not gonna get something in that range...then most phones do as good a job as the low end compacts these days

Isn't the Canon S100 with the Digic V processor suppose to be the ducks nut?

iPhone even has a few light meter applications that aren't too bad

But any dslr's built in light meter is way better

+1 for the light meter app on the iPhone and also the G12, recently bought one, great camera (mrs is very happy)

My sister went out and got herself a Canon G12 as well. Pretty good camera, I had a whirl at it and it seemed a little complicated at first but I got the hang of it quite quickly.

So +1 for the G12 here as well :)

Also the Canon S95 produces some great shots. A bit older now, but still a good camera that is still available as far as I'm aware! It's small as well but has a stunning screen and all the functions and settings you'd want!

+1 for the G12. Very nice camera. Maybe a little bulky for the pocket but since the boss carries her handbag everywhere it was not an issue. Great low light capability.
