PREMIER ANNOUNCES BEST SPOTS TO WELCOME THE QUEEN AND THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH TO BRISBANE
Premier Anna Bligh today named the best vantage points for Queenslanders to welcome Her Majesty The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh to Brisbane on Monday 24 October.
While in Brisbane The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh will participate in a Brisbane River Cruise from Bretts Wharf to South Bank, Public Walk at Cultural Forecourt, South Bank, Queensland Government Reception to acknowledge those affected by the natural disasters during the summer of 2010/11 (private event), Opening of Rain Bank at Rainforest Green, South Bank, and attend a luncheon hosted by the Governor of Queensland (private event).
The Premier encouraged Queenslanders to get down to one of the designated public viewing areas along the Brisbane River or pay a visit to South Bank to send a warm Queensland welcome to our Head of State.
Public viewing opportunities will be available during the Brisbane River Cruise along the banks of the Brisbane River at the following points:
Bretts Wharf to Breakfast Creek
Bulimba Riverside Park and adjacent anchorage points
Eagle Street Pier to South Bank.
People should be in position at the public viewing areas for the River Cruise which will commence at 11.30am.
"This is a great opportunity for people to line the banks of our beautiful river and show The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh a true Queensland welcome," Ms Bligh said.
Queenslanders will also be able to welcome The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh at South Bank when they will do a public walk along the Cultural Forecourt from the South Bank pontoon to the Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC).
People will be able to gather in the designated areas at South Bank - along the Cultural Forecourt and near the Wheel of Brisbane, Rain Bank and Rainforest Green - ready for the public walk which is scheduled to commence at 12.20pm.
"Following the small reception I am hosting at QPAC to acknowledge the emergency personnel, volunteers, and those affected by the summer's natural disasters, The Queen will officially open Rain Bank at Rainforest Green, South Bank at 1.15pm," Ms Bligh said.
The proceedings at South Bank will also be broadcast live to public viewing screens positioned at the Cultural Forecourt and Rainforest Green so that Queenslanders are able to be a part of all activities spread across the Parklands.
A map of the public viewing opportunities at South Bank is now available at www.premiers.qld.gov.au/events/royal-visit.aspx.
On the day of the visit there will be some restricted pedestrian access within the Parklands and some road closures. People are encouraged to use public transport.
People should arrive in plenty of time and bring food, water, hat and sunscreen in case there is a long wait. Access to toilets and food outlets will be limited depending on large crowd numbers.
Queensland Police Service will also make a statement regarding road closures and public viewing points closer to the date.
The last visit to Queensland by The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh was in 2002 when they attended CHOGM at Coolum. The 2011 Royal Visit coincides with The Queen's attendance at CHOGM in Perth this month.
