Please help to choose a lens

Hi fellow photographers,
I need your advise
I upgrade my gear to FF Canon 5D MK2 and now I can’t use EFS lenses. I have 2 dissent primes: 50mm 1.4 and 85mm 1.8, but I definitely need at least 1 tele.
The question is: what to buy Canon 24mm – 105mm f4 or Canon 70mm – 200mm f4? Both IS. I mostly shoot lifestyle.

OK, first up I think you are confusing terminology here.

You said you need a tele. I'm assuming a telephoto lens, and not a TV?? :p

The lenses you listed as potential candidates are referred to as zooms.

ie. if you want a tele, then you will(or should) get advice such as a 200/2, 400/2.8, 400/5.6, 500/4 and so on.. all being teles!

what you seem to want is a zoom lens, whether tele photo zoom(70-200mm) or wide to moderate tele zoom(24-105mm) is where any subsequent questions will be directed towards.

As Kiwi said.... (asked :confused013) what exact genre of 'lifestyle' are you into? if it's still life of non moving consumables.. cakes, coffees at a cafe .. etc, then a 24-105 may be most worthwhile.. maybe even a 24-70/2.8!
But is lifestyle more about people in various situations? ... economic, or political? or states of undress? :eek: ..... Is it about buildings perhaps?

Sorry, I mean environmental portraiture. I have Sigma 24-70 f2.8, but it’s quite heavy and doesn’t have IS.

it seems strange to me that if you are using a 5d m11
and you talk the lingo on styles and the like
why you would need a hand picking a lens
you have a 24-70 which is a pretty good lens already
and would probably suit whatever you want to shoot
unless your after more reach

if you can afford it, buy both the lenses you first mentioned.

BTW the f4 version of the 70-200 is just as sharp as (if not sharper than) the f2.8 lighter and less expensive if you do not need that extra stop of speed

The Sigma 24-70 is NOT a heavy lens. In fact that is probably the sharpest lens in my line-up and its a pleasure to use. If you find it heavy, start carrying your camera and lens around more, and get used to the weight.

IS is something thats been available for about 10 years. Before that we all used camera's and lenses that didn't have it. Having IS is not going to make you a better photographer, work at understanding how to take good photos and what settings to use, and you will not need IS.

I personally like the Canon 15-85 lens.

Its relatively cheap, sharp and light :cool:
