Bandicoot

I was watching TV tonight & heard a squeaking noise from outside
I found this little fella outside my room - ISO6400 & a hand torch

Anyone that has guinea pigs should have these instead, or a Bilby!
I sometimes wonder why more Australian animals haven't been domesticated.

Such a cute fella the noise is just like that of a dogs play toy that squeak noise

Its taunting me again out on the lawn I was able to get quite close full frame at 200mm but I just was not able to get a good focus in the ultra low light, I managed this one when it moved up into the bush

These guys would be much better than rabbits or guinea's

Very cute when I first found him on the grass (and failed to get a focus) I just watched him he was getting so stuck into the grass chomping away I could hear him eating now and then he would make an excited squeak

I was happy to finally get a look I see its droppings a lot this is a first time I've managed to get close


I don't think that little fellow would want to come into my back yard. My dogs would be there to greet him.

Possibly why we have them he lives up in the bush near our chookhouse and we do not have any dogs

They are cute, but they are also a nuisance in a garden. They dig holes all over the place - they are no respecters of lawn :)

Bandicoots are also thought to carry ticks, including the paralysis tick.

Since they started fox-baiting in the Lane Cove NP, we are seeing many more native animals in our garden, including bandicoots.

I don't mind having them around I have heard from several people they may carry ticks

We have a cat but shes only outside with us, I quite enjoy having them around but they do make a lot of holes in the lawn :P

I am not quite sure which of my 'facts' you think needs straightening, but I assume you have misread my posting and (erroneously) assumed that I said bandicoots are the ONLY carriers of ticks.


Fact 1. I am fully aware that bandicoots are not exclusively responsible for spreading ticks.

Fact 2. I also know that there are very few cats in our area, as most people around here tend to prefer dogs. I also am pretty confident that there are no feral dogs roaming around my suburb, and that the domestic dogs are all kept well under control by their owners.

Fact 3. My garden is riddled with bandicoot holes so there definitely are bandicoots on my property. Besides the holes as evidence, I have seen the actual cute critters a few times.

Fact 4. I am perfectly happy to put up with the holes, even thought they do have a nuisance value.

Fact 5. While not the only carriers of ticks, bandiccots do carry ticks.

Fact 6. I see no evidence of dogs or cats in my garden but I do see lots of evidence of bandicoots in it.

BTW, there are also dozens of possums in the area, and since the fox population has been reduced there are now hundreds of rabbits as well. No doubt, the possums and rabbits also carry ticks.

Of course, I am much happier with the possums and bandicoots and even the rabbits than I was with the foxes.

whatever you have in or about where you live, consider yourself fortunate as a lot of our Aussie wild life is now non existent.
