Hello
I have been interested in getting a Tokina 100mm Macro lens
and have found one on ebay for $460, I tried out this lens at the
camera shop and they want they want $750.
I took some quick and dirty samples handheld using a Nikon 105
and the Tokina and sharpness wise of the photos there seems to
no difference. Tokina doesn't have VR but want it for MACRO
If anyone has or uses this Lens I would be very interested in
their options
Sorry , Mongo has no direct experience with this lens but can tell you its prior version, the Tokina 90mm f2.5 macro manual lens is considered one of the sharpest macro lenses in that range ever made. e.g. if a Nikkor 105mm f2.8 macro has a score of 4.1 or 4.2 out of 10, the Tokina 90mm was scoring a 4.6 out of 10. Not sure about thee Tokina 100mm macro
Did a test with another great macro , the Vivitar 105 f2.5 macro and noticed no diference with a 105 mm nikkor f2.8 AI-s (except for the most minor colour difference)

Here are test reports by Photozone on the Tokina 100mm f2.8 and the Nikon 105mm f2.8 VR:
Test done by Photozone on the Tokina on DX format camera only. Check all 3 pages:

The Nikon 105mm f2.8 VR Micro for comparison reasons. Check all 3 pages:

There is very little difference between them and the Nikon only just gets the slight edge in the conclusion according to Photozone for optical properites, 4.5 stars over the Tokina's 4 stars, but for overall, the Tokina wins simply due to price, getting 5 stars overall over the 4.5 stars for the Nikon.
Ken Rockwell gives it a very good write up, if that is any help. Here is where you can find Ken's "review"

Quote:
"The Tokina 100mm f/2.8 AF is one of the very best lenses I've ever tested.
Not only are its optics perfect, so are its ergonomics. This FX and DX lens is both sharper and handles better than Nikon's made-in-China, DX-only 85mm f/3.5 VR, which costs more!
This Tokina is a winner, and one of the sharpest lenses I've ever put on any camera, at any distance including infinity."
Looks like the Tokina is a real beauty! I hope this helps.
