The smaller the aperture (ie the larger the number) the greater the depth of field (ie the more that will be in focus). There's more to it than that but that's the gist.

Hi Pudda, I don't know how much detail you want but the very basic is:
The smaller the aperture (higher number i.e. F22 is smaller than F8) the greater the depth of field (more of the image will be in focus across the whole image).
The larger the aperture (smaller number i.e F2.8 is larger than F8) the shallower will be the depth of field (the image will have a narrow band in focus).
I hope this helps, ask more questions if this doesn't answer your needs. :)
Try here http://www.cambridgeincolour.com/ under photo essentials. Then you can use the depth of field calculator to test various apertures with various lenses.
Pudda, have a look through the AP Library. Here are a couple of starting points:-

G'day Pudda
can someone please explain the relationship of depth of field and aperture in simplistic terminology... i.e. 2 syllable words or less
in 2-syllable words mate .... the bigger the aperture number "f22-32 etc" the bigger the Depth of Field - the smaller the aperture number "f2-3-4-5" , the smaller the Depth of Field [and forget the rest for the time being]
Regards, Phil
You may wish to have a browse of our new and evolving Library. (http://www.ausphotography.net.au/forum/showlibrary.php) in the New to Photography section, lots on Aperture
