ADSL N Class Routers

I currently have a ADSL Wireless Router D-Link thingy that's overheating and cutting out. It's not N class and a couple of years old now. It gets thrashed with 2 iphones, two laptops and two ipads, not to mention the Xbox Live thrashing it to death

So, what should I go for you think ? will I notice faster broadband download speed ?

Last half of the Q 1st: If the N router has a significantly higher bandwidth than the (assumed) G-router and if you have a 100/1000MBit network card in your computer, then the transfer across the network should improve. The actual download speed from the internet (via the modem) shouldn't change much.

I was the same Darren, I had a DLink G604T Adsl modem and was experiencing frequent drop outs and had to power cycle it increasingly often. I updated to a Billion BePAC 7800N seen here (http://au.billion.com/product/wireless/bipac7800n.php). I researched and come up with this one, then remembered to check Whirlpool and found it to be very highly rated there.

My internet speed is marginally better according to the tests here (http://www.ozspeedtest.com/bandwidth-test/), but that isn't due to the Wireless N because the N or G speeds for that matter are far in excess of the 6mbps internet connection but maybe the modem is better or something. My home transfer speed is better between PCs, I notice the difference. And it is much more stable, even with up to 8 devices hanging of it, I've never had to reset it once which is a welcome relief. It also has a stronger WiFi signal meaning more reach around the house.

I would second the Billion 7800. I've had a lot of routers (D-Link, Linksys, Belkin, Netgear) but none have stood up as the Billion has. My connection to ADSL is rock solid, wireless - never had dropouts etc.. You will not reget it if you get any of the Billion models.

4th the 7800n unless you can afford a cisco or draytek..

Different routers have different chips in them to deal with line attenuation and line noise.
IIRC the 7800n has a broadcom chip which helps with long distances to your exchange.

I'd have no problems recommending Billion 7800n or (what I currently use) a 7404VNOX.
I've setup the 7404 several times for other SOHO's. 3G backup connection has helped a few times.

modems/routers with the broadcom chipset in them seem to get better sync speeds too...something else to keep in mind :D :th3:

And just because you buy an 'N' class router, doesn't mean when connected wirelessly you will get 300mbs, the wireless card you have in your laptop or desktop etc will also determine the speed you can connect to the router, and even when the clients are 'N' class, you still may not get full speed. If you buy a wireless dongle the same brand as the router, you may then get full or close to full speed. Consider dual band as well..

dont get the netgear DG834GV..the Adsl is ok..but the wireless is woeful...my older Billion 7401 for $99au was great..a powercut killed it in the end..but it lasted for about 3 years of hard use...24hr 7 days with loads of streaming wireless to PS3,s etc.....im gonna get another, as the netgear is crap in the wireless area.....

N Class routers are only good on N class planets (http://boi.alt-starfleet-rpg.net/Planetary_Classes#N-Class_Planet) :lol:
