View Full Version : Sports with a 55-250
Has anybody got any examples of sports shots using a 50d or similar camera with a 55-250 attached. Not real interested in stuff that has been run heavily through the computer just straight out of the box more or less.

No mate, I have a 50D and the lens you mention, but they leave a lot to be desired, bought a 15=85 instead, great lens.

I have a few shots with that lens camera combo. I find the focus speed on the lens is a bit too slow for action shots but try this pic. Have a look thru the gallery, most of the telephoto shots were taken with this combo that day.

I find that lens to be nice and sharp with no CA, but is only let down by no USM focus drive motor which makes keeping up with sports a bit hard. I used it for footy pics with mostly good results. Use your burst mode with AI Servo, centre point focus and see how you go. You'll take plenty but get some keepers. What type of sport are you shooting?

I am mainly shooting rugby league and was just wondering what other people were getting out of this combo. It's not to bad when the action is close but suffers when you try and pull a shot from afar. You (Old Skool) got some good clear pics of the motox. I've still got a lot to learn about the camera and settings.
Many thanks

I use the combo that you mentioned, not to bad if you can get in on the action, but as old skool mentioned, not the quickest lens for sports related photography, guess it depends on the speed and action of what your photographing as well

Biggest problem with footy is that you see something on the other side of the ground and shoot away. Really need to control yourself to the action on your side / quarter of the ground and if shooting during the day that lens should be OK. I've since updated to a EF 200mm F2.8L prime lens and 1.4X teleconvertor for footy but still get sucked into shooting action too far away. Bang for buck the 200mm is a great lens, super fast and sharp - mine was less than $1000 via Hong Kong - EBay.

if ur serious about sports, the 55-200 just won't do. apart from being slow, the USM and AF on these are also a bit slower than what you'd get on the 70-300 version.
