Aftermarket batteries

Hi all

Just after a little feedback on aftermarket batteries for those that have them? Currently in the process of obtaining a battery grip for my 50D and of course will need to purchase a few extra batteries to go with it, does anybody here use non-genuine canon batteries and if so do you have any issues with them? Or should I go down the track of purchasing genuine Canon batteries?

they actually don't have a brand on them, I do remember I got them from ebay though, Sorry I can't be more helpful!

I've got a couple and have found them ok, but from what I have read they tend to die earlier than the Canon branded ones (ie you might get 2 years rather than 3 or 4) but given the price I think it is worth it.

When I had a 30D and 40D I bought a bunch of aftermarket batteries from Sterlingtek (http://sterlingtek.com/). Can't recommend them highly enough. They are every bit as good as the originals.

Unfortunately they don't do the 5DII batteries :(

I have bought 5DII "decoded" batteries from [a popular auction website]. They work perfectly now that some vendors have cracked the battery encryption for the 5DII. :)

Thanks for all the replies so far! Have found a fair few online sites that supply them at very reasonable prices, close to a 1/4 of the RRP of Canon Genuine batteries. Will now have to do some measuring, have a horrible feeling that when the battery grip is installed that it’s not going to fit in my bag!

I have aftermarket batteries in both my 400D and my 7D and all perform as well if not better than the genuine ones. The 400d ones are all over 4 years old now and still perform as well. Iwas going to get a battery grip for my 7d but it would not fit in my bag with it fitted, the 400D + grip is no problem.

I have one Canon and one generic battery for my 7D - both can be charged in the Canon charger OK.
The generic battery lasts perhaps half to two thirds of the Canon. And I'm amazed at the Canon - 1900 shots last time and there was still over 10% charge left.

So while I would certainly buy generic again the Canon batteries are good value if you don't mind paying a lot more for them - if that makes sense :confused013

Yes, I bought some recently that were advertised as genuine, but priced at 29.95. So far though they seem great. Use them in the battery grip and they last a good while.

I've used a couple Aftermarket batteries and had no issues. In fact the only battery I had an issue with is a genuine Canon for a P&S off ebay that only lasted1/3rd normal. :th3:

I think I have one after market battery that seems to have a mind of its own as to whether it will charge or not, but overall I can't see a major difference.

Thats good to read PH005:th3: because I plan to get me a Grip and Batterie from ebay my self and wanted just start a thread about it what people think about it;).

My three batteries arrived the other day, have only really used one so far, lasted for the whole session so I’m pretty happy with that :)

Unfortunately my battery grip has been placed on back order, warehouse has no stock from the supplier I chose to buy it from, has been about 4ish weeks now, so can't say I’m overly happy. Was given the option to get my cash back if I want, but i can't find anywhere else to purchase one from for a similar price. So it's back to the waiting game I guess...

Have used Phottix in 450& 50D for some years. Only difference is the price.:)

I've had quite good results with after market batteries ... but since leaving them sitting idle for some months during a house move I discovered a few days ago that almost all the after market ones are dead and won't take a charge ... while the genuine Canon ones are still fine. The after market batteries came from a variety of sources and were all fully charged before the move. Of course, the upside is that the non-genuine batteries cost a fraction of the price of the genuine ones and I've had a couple of years good use from them ... so not complaining.

I have bought three non-Canon batteries - 2x Phottix and 1 unbranded.

The Phottix work fine in both my 550D and my 60D, and charge without issues in the respective Canon chargers. The unbranded one wouldn't charge.

The Phottix is recognised by the 60D and it reports its state of charge and its 'condition' as it does for the genuine Canon battery.
