Dust or Scratch?

Hey Guys,

Just wondering what your thoughts are, purchased a second hand 5D as a back up body and took a couple of test shots which showed the sensor as being dirty. Just not sure whether its dust or a scratch? First is at f/22 and second is at f/2.8. Both or cropped in and the x was a focus point. You can see the marks in question on the top right hand corner..

I have tried using the rocket blower to no avail, and just called up the local camera shop for a sensor clean quote and they quoted $140 :eek:

Never really had to deal with dirty sensors that wasn't fixed by the good old rocket blower :confused013

#1. Do that test before you part with the cash.
#2. Invest in your own sensor cleaning kit.
#3. Let the local camera store know that they are trying to rob you blind and that they should be ashamed of themselves. Also throw in the bit about the "fact" that you were about to buy a new 300mm F/2.8 lens and were going to ask them for a price but after the sensor cleaning quote you will buy it online. :D

Yeah i might have to bite the bullet and put some faith in myself not to destroy the sensoor and get a copper hill kit! I just had a look at the sensor and im 99% sure its stubborn dust!

Yeah its a ripoff, i can buy 2 sensor cleaning KITS for their one effort, go figure :confused013

Buy a kit, learn how to use it, clean your spectacles, OK forget that bit, you still have good eyesight and take heart that you are actually cleaning the filter in front of the sensor and if a trained monkey in a camera store can do it so can you.:D

Mercho, I agree give it a go your self , I did it myself with an "Eclipse" Sensor cleaning kit , took two go's to get the stubborn stuff off , Make sure you get the right size swab for the Full Frame , I know it's a bit daunting , But once you do it , It's easy :)

I don't know if it's a scratch or dust but it's weird that it's really so obvious at 2.8

Its not noticeable in any photos bar the sheet of paper ones, just did a few shots outside and can't see it at all (f/4-f/8).. Ill give it a clean and see what happens

That's what I thought. It looks identical regardless of the aperture, which seems weird for dust (unlike the other marks which behave exactly as expected for dust and practically disappear at f2.8). Let us know how you go Brad, hopefully it all cleans off OK.

The x is what I drew on the paper for a focus point, the dust in question is in the top right... ?

Yep, the stuff up in the top right corner is definitely dust. I recognise it as being what I have on my camera. It's only apparent when I've taken a shot with lots of blue sky. Best advice I've had regarding checking for dust is to shoot a piece of blank white card. This will show up any dust and dirt spots really well.

Thanks apollo, just looked a bit funky, not like the dust I have usually seen. Hopefully by monday I will have the cleaning kit and post the results

I'm glad you didn't also take a photo of dust, that would definately be confusing !!!

The best test is to set the Aperture to f22 and take a shot of blue sky , That'll show up any dust spots , Give it a clean and repeat the process :)
