Hi guys, I have been asked to do some research into good lenses for a DSLR Canon G12 for hubby's friend.

They have no idea about anything to do with camra's and lenses and I need straight forward advise thats in english that they will understand.

They want to know what a telephoto lens does (any special features) or is it just a above normal focal lens?
What would you photograph with it?
And is it recomended for a beginner that just wants to take pic's of pretty things?

What lens would you recomend for a Canon G12 for a beginner?

cheers Jody

Unfortunately a Canon G12 is not a DSLR nor can it have interchangeable lenses..........

Umm. the G12 doesn't have interchangeable lenses. The one that comes with it is permanently attached. It is not a DSLR or one of the new Mirrorless lens camera's that allow interchanging of lenses.

I have a G12 and it's not a DSLR and it can't take different lenses. It's described as a "premium compact". Maybe they've confused it with something else? :confused013

The G12 can be fitted with lens adaptors though, which come in wide angle, telephoto and macro varieties from what I understand. Don't have time to research it further now, but here's a link to some info about them (http://lightdescription.blogspot.com/2010/11/g12-lens-adapters.html).
