what lens

hi all
thanks to axle i am going on a helicopter ride after christmas and want to no
what lens is the best for shots out of chopper at 1000 ft

The lens selection depends upon what you want to shoot, if just a general landscape then a wide angle zoom (something about 17-85) if ultra wide then about 10-22 but these are tricky things to use because of the "fish-eye" effect, but a close-up of the ground the around 70-200 lens might be the go.
You'll have to select a good day with plenty of sunlight to try and keep your shutter speed up, choppers can provide a smooth platform in the right conditions, but boy they can be real buggers on some days.

we cannot select the day it is booked so i will be getting a 10-20 sigma and maybe take the 120-400 also

I have done a number of chopper rides in recent years via my travelling activities - so ...
Not much help to you, but this is one area where the fixed-lens ultrazoom cameras have it all over the slr's ... the 18-300 all-in-one does everything, and 'real easy too' :) :)

For your flight tho - the w/a lens will probably only be of use 10% of the time - as Richard says the fish-eye effect buggers up too much. My guess is that the big lens will be the one you will get best results from - tho 120 is a long way up the mm's range ... do you have a mate with a 70 to 200, 50 - 300 or somesuch???

ISO at 400, s/speed at 1/1000 & the rest is eazy ...... and don't have fun -> that's not allowed :eek: :eek:

the wife is a bit nervy its her first time in air
i am going with 24-70 and 120-400 and see how it goes
no matter how the photos turn out the images will be imbeded in the head for life

Yep macca, these two will cover your need just fine IMHO, have a good trip:)
(P.S. take more shots than you think you will need, you will thank yourself years later, believe me:party6:)
