Repair of a 70-200 f2.8L

So the cheapish Canon 70-200 f2.8L USM (non IS) that I picked up on ebay came back from Canon today. Yay! So glad to finally be able to use it. Seems to backfocus just a tad on my 40D so i'm going to sell that and get a 50D so I can fiddle with the focus a bit.

For future reference, here is what everything cost:
(issues were stuffed front lens element and broken DOF scale cover (tiny piece of plastic) - included in labour was replacement of these parts, plus full clean and test):

So this is cost price from Canon service in Clayton, Vic. Please note if you get something similar done through an agent who sends it off to Canon on your behalf, they will add their commission on top of this too.
And they sent me the old lens element back,so now I have a scratched up heavy hunk of L glass to use as a paperweight haha.

I was watching that lens on eBay as well, I hope you got it for a good price. At least the seller was upfront about the damage to begin with. I purchased a 17-85 IS USM to replace my original 18-55 kit lens on eBay about 10 months ago. I thought I'd asked all the right questions only to discover that it hunted for focus. The seller denied that there was anything wrong with it when he sold it and that it was a case of (in his words) "Caveat Emptor" Buyer Beware.The end result was another $300+ for repairs on top of the purchase price. Enjoy your 70-200 f2.8, I recently bought a new 70-200 f4L IS and LOVE it. The IQ is so far ahead of the 75-300 kit lens it is like the fog has lifted.

I got it for 400. Not as cheap as I would have liked but ah well. Loving the lens :)
