As I understand it as a Pentax user I have a available to me this range of Standard Zooms:

Pentax DA*16-50
Pentax DA 17-70
SIGMA 17-70mm F2.8-4 DC Macro OS HSM
SIGMA 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG APOMacro HSM II
SIGMA 17-70mm F2.8-4.5 DC Macro
SIGMA 24-70mm F2.8 IF EX DG HSM
SIGMA 24-70mm F2.8 EX DG Macro
Tamron 28-75mm SP AF F2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) Lens
Tamron 28-75mm AF F/2.8 XR Di LD[/SIZE]

??are there any stand outs
ie rippers OR to be avoided.
are there any I have missed?

Cheers

PS I am the proud new owner of a K7 plus 70-200 f/2.8 and am looking for something more everyday that is as fast and hardy. I photograph kids' indoor gymnastics and insects legs in the rain on magnificent beaches at sunset!.

Congratulations on your PENTAX K7 purchase SnappyTom! May we see many interesting pictures from you as you learn to use it.

Won't the smc PENTAX DA 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AL WR, DA 50-200mm f/4-5.6 ED WR, and DA 55-300mm f/4-5.8 ED lenses work on the K7 body as well as the ones you have listed?

You might want to check 'em out...

Either the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 or Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 are good and fast walk-around lenses.

It depends on what your shooting.
If landscapes and you want a wider lens then get a Sigma 10-20 (any will do)

they have an 18-250mm, which i have as a main lens on my K7.
gives a good range of zoom and is not heavy to carry.

I'm half interested in a 18-250 (and there are several) but all super zooms are a compromise.
(this from someone with a 50-500 ;) )

Again it depends on what you need. Fast? (i.e. bigger aperture) which is good for people.

G'day snappytom

in your list, you've missed the Siggy 18-125

and as Kym says ... it all depends upon what you are shooting

Q: do you want to do "wide-angle" stuff or "medium-angle" stuff or "narrow-angle" stuff.
Will you need a 15-30 OR an 18-70 OR an 50-200 OR a compromise like the 18-125????

Only you can answer the Q ...
Regards, Phil

Thanks everyone,
Popped into buy a memory card and there in the cabinet was an 'as new' Sigma 17-70 f2.8-4.5 in PENTAX Mount!
I took that as an omen!
I am now the excited owner of 17-70 plus 70-200 for K7.
Now I just need to learn how to drive the thing!
