Recommendations for prime lens

I am hoping to get a new lens in the next few weeks and have been tossing up between a couple of different primes.

I had the use of a friends 24mm f/1.4L and loved it although some times I found myself moving in a tad to get closer (I'm using a 450D so it's not a real 24mm on this body). I can't afford this lens so have been looking at the 28mm f/1.8 USM, 24mm f/2.8 or the 35mm f/2.0.

I have more of an interest in doing landscapes & portraits. Ultimately I'd love to get the 24-70mm f/2.8L but that's out of my price range.

Would love to hear any feedback on those lenses.

I haven't used any of those lenses, but something to bear in mind is that they are not particularly wide on an APS-C camera.

For landscapes, do you want an ultra-wide view? If so, something like the EF-S 10-22mm zoom would be a good choice. You don't need fast prime for landscapes.

For portraiture something like a 50/1.4 or the cheap-as-chips 50/1.8 would be a good choice for an APS-C camera.

I would get the Sigma 10-20 combined with a Canon 50 f1.4 or f1.8 + a light stand + a flash and trigger and a brolly, all for under 1 thousand dollars

and you are outfitted to shoot beautiful landscapes and portraits:)

I have the 35mm f/2, and it's very sharp and quick (though some find it a bit noisy which I think it's fine). Some of the AP'ers have it as well.

Thanks for all the responses. I have the 50mm 1.4 already and love it.

To throw into the mix, I've been reading great reviews on the 17-55mm f/2.8 and think it would be a good general purpose that would also be suitable for landscape to.

So many choices.
