Hi all im very new here but i have been shopping for a Canon 50D for quite some time now and only just been bothered to actually look around.

I have read that most stores in Brisbane have sold out of these as Canon are no longer producing them. I have been looking over the internet and have found the price of the 50D is from $920-$1000 for the body.

As i am just getting into photography i need some help with recommendations for a suitable lens for me? I will be shooting mainly portrait photo's of my new baby son and the rest will be motorsport events. I want to keep the lens price range between $400-$600 even if that means sacrificing quality.

Would anyone recommend purchasing anything off ebay, or any online store. They can offer some pretty good deals on there im just wondering if it is better to stay local for warranty/support issues.

I am currently out of Australia until October which might see all the 50D's gone so i am trying to find one online. So if anyone has had good online experiences feel free to pass some info one!

Thanks in advance,
Cameron.

Finished reading that one before posting this, i guess i have narrowed it down to this:

50D + Canon 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 + 16GB Sandisk CF card + Spare battery. For $1450 does that sounds reasonable?

I think that this lens is a good starting lens as i may get the Canon 50mm f/1.8 Lens as well.

No idea about the canons - thought I'd point you to that thread after seeing you report stock issues.

Massive discounting on major retail stores a few days ago for 50D, aawwwww shucks, I missed out! The 60D may be introduced as early as 21st July! I expect to get a 50D at a good price soon... unless they run out...

D90 and sigma 70-200 HSM would be my choice :)

Which is already the case at many outlets...

i would go for a better lens (17-50 f2.8 or 28-75 f2.8.)

do you really need 16GB now?

do you really need a spare battery now?

The 28-135mm is too long for a crop body (equal to 45-216mm)...17-50mm would suit better as an everyday walk-around unit...
