View Full Version : The glowing filament shot

I've been playing around with the idea of the smashed light bulb shot with a glowing filament for a while and today I went in to town to get some cheap bulbs to smash and all the shop had was frosted bulbs ! What a nuisance .
So I tried it anyway with the one clear bulb I had and went through the frosted bulbs as well .

This was my 'studio' , I was surprised at how well the D40 and 35mm 1.8 lens focused in this light , I fired an SB26 at 1/4 power to the side and it triggered the one SB800 that was in SU4 mode .

http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m300/dvdowns/high%20speed/zsmashsetup002.jpg

I had the D90 with a protective cover on it in case the bulbs had powder in them and the 18-200 lens at F11 and 2 seconds , iso 200 .
This was a test shot while it was still too light to shoot .
The filament glow was created by firing another flash with the bulb and a soldering iron in series with the circuit .

And I sort of messed up with the one and only clear bulb I had , I hit too hard and went too far into it .

Tomorrow I may try to find some more clear bulbs but for now I have quite a few images of frosted bulbs to go through .

The frosted bulbs were difficult to work with , trying to see the glow and time the hit right .

I was hoping to get the crack to show the glowing filament from the side but no such luck .

Desmond, I really think the 3rd shot in the first series is great, a bit more glow from the filament would have worked but the detail from the flying bulb makes up for it. :th3:

Thanks - I need to drop the hammer rather then hit with it - it helps to bulb to bounce off the surface as well . The frosted bulbs were extremely weak and broke easily though .

Of course I had to do a few with the sword !

Nice work mate, you're getting some great shots from this little rig :)

Thanks - I may have to just cough up on some of the newer clear light bulbs . Ubfortunately they are making them much smaller these days :(

#3 is definitely a ripper.

I hope that the 'All Steel Hammer' is being held with caution ... or at least not by you ;)

It does have a rubber handle :) But it's probably only about 50 volts going through the filament .

It may have 50v going through the circuit but if the active lead goes to the filament before the soldering iron there will be 240v on one of the filament probes. If you touch it you will get zapped. Make sure the active lead goes to the soldering iron first.

Interesting pics though.:)

Yep , the soldering iron is first in line with the capacitor and then the bulb and then the flash tube .:)
I'm thinking about using a starter solenoid to push a spray can up against two contacts joined to the capacitor .... BOOM !:th3:

Today I bought 10 clear bulbs - I'll post some pictures after I finish cleaning up ALL THAT GLASS ON THE DARN GARAGE FLOOR !

Excellent Desmond :th3:

#3, the closeup, has the most impact (pardon the pun) as a photo but I reckon you have done a top job on all.

Waiting for dark really gets to me - so I suppose you will all have to put up with me posting test shots until it gets dark :)

The bulb never broke but my face is in the reflection :)

Then someone pulled up on the farm with a truck and messed my shot up !
