IS Mode 1 and 2?

I bought the new Canon EF 70-200mm F2.8 IS II yesterday (oh yes..... outstanding lens) and cannot work out what is the actual differences between the IS Mode 1 and 2.

The read the manual and it wasn't of much help. Can anyone here with experience help me with some advice?

Mode 1 will stabilize the subject on both the X and Y axis ie. up and down and side to side. Mode 2 is more commonly used for motorsports or running for example, as it engages the IS for panning of the Y axis - going across from side to side to track a moving vehicle or a person.

Stick with Mode 1 for 99% of your photos:)

I got a little confused as to why there is a need for Mode 2 since Mode 1 does exactly the same thing. Because if I were taking a panning shot, I will not be shifting my lens back and forth horizontally.

Okay, stick with Mode 1 it is then :D
