canon eos lenses

I have recently upgraded my canon eos 450d to a 500d and I want to get myself a macro lens to fit both cameras.
I haven't a clue what i should be looking at.
can anyone give me some suggestions please

Do you want to stick with Canon? And are you planning to stay with crop cameras for a while? If so, I can't recommend the Canon EF-S 60mm f2.8 Macro highly enough. It's small, light, easy to handhold and dangerously sharp even wide open. I adore mine and it's easily my favourite lens. It also doubles as a great portrait lens on a crop camera.

It does depend a little on what you want to shoot though. The Canon 100mm f2.8 (original or new L IS version) are both very good and give you a little extra working distance if you're shooting skittish subjects like insects. The 100mm can also be used on a FF camera if you decide to go in that direction.

There are also good macro lenses to be had from the third party manufacturers such as Sigma and Tamron and they come in a variety of lengths. Macro lenses are generally all made to quite high tolerances given the precise nature of the work they're used for, so you're very unlikely to get a bad one. It probably comes down to dollars and focal length preference.

Yeah budget is a big consideration.

With macro's though I don't think you go far wrong.
In the Canon genuine line
EF 100mm
EF-s 60mm (can't be used on a full frame camera)
Tamron
SIgma

Whilst no having used any of these personally, they all rate very well from those that have

As stated the Canon 100mm 2.8 is a great Macro leans, good for portraits too!

If you have a tighter budget, the Tamron 90mm is also a good choice...

yeh another vote for the canon 100mm 2.8 macro lens. ive used it on a 450d and my 5dmkII very nice lens

sigma 105mm 2.8 is a great lens and can be found a fair bit cheaper than its cannon counterpart (100mm)

budget is bout $500-$800, im hoping i can get something reasonable within that price range..

You will be able to get both the Tamron 90 2.8, Sigma 105 2.8, and the Canon 100 2.8 (non IS) for that money. If you want the IS version of the Canon youll need to go up to $1K.
