View Full Version : Do you have a P&S and an SLR
bit of a poll do you also have a P&S as well as a DSLr/SLR ?
I have a kodak P&S (whenb working lol) asnd the dslr
I would love a Ricoh Gr1v or Contax T3.
Yes to both, and a film SLR and a for real Kodak Box Brownie! :xmas31:
SLRs only. I used to have an SLR and a P&S but I didn't like the quality the P&S was giving me nextto the SLR, so I bought another SLR. And then another .. and now I can't stop!

Yes, 30D + Canon A720IS. A great little P&S, 6x optical, 8Mp & functions similar to SLR. For those times when you go out and just want to slip a camera in your pocket. Takes great pics.

I have a 500D and a PowerShot A470 (running CHDK). The A470 is a cheap enough camera that if it got nicked, damaged or lost - I'd be more annoyed about the potential of the memory card being gone than the camera. So hence that's the one that gets taken to places where there is more risk of that occurring.
I have an old Ixus 4MP but haven't used it in probably a year or two. I'm waiting (but not holding my breath) for Nikon to bring out something like the Oly EP-1...
Cheers.

What you see in my sig, plus a Canon AE1+Program & a Pentax ME Super (both film) and a Canon Powershot A590 IS P&S. All of which still see some use. :)
My DSLR lives next to my SLR, lives next to my P+S.Dont underestimate P+S.
Have had an Olympus P&S for a few years now (one of the shock proof & water proof), did me great for a while, but now all I use is the SLR
I have a DSLR but would like a waterproof P&S to have some fun pics of the grandkids and to take to beach, out in a boat etc.

I have and use both.
My dslr is my preferred camera, of course, but I can't always take it with me so the P&S comes in handy for a few things: quick snaps; scoping out a place to photograph later; and it's far easier to carry than my kit so it goes with me everywhere regardless of the time of day. :)

I have a little Canon Powershot TX1, a 20D, a 7D and a few canon film camera's including a p&s underwater. Just gave one of the newest Canon film camera away as i'll never use it but can borrow it back any time if I change my mind.
I always take the Canon TX1 on holidays even if I take my DSLR as there are just some instances that it works better. Like trying to ski down a slope while taking video!!
I have a 5DII and an old Kodak 1.6 Mp P&S which I sometimes use for ebay photos. HRH Liz has the A710 IS, as oldskool says, a very nice p&S, there's even a firmware hack out there somewhere to allow it to shoot RAW.

I bought a Lumix P&S 12.1Mp only a week ago. I don't know many professionals that wouldn't have one or two. I use it all the time for location shoots and pre-shoot line-ups to get perspective and light values. A P&S is much easier to handle in pre-production when you need to get data to a client on the run. For instance, I could go to Longreach and take location shots, transmit them to a client directly and get a yea or nay without moving. The big advantage is I'm not burdened with 20 Kilos of DSLR or if I'm in a volatile situation (airborne or back of truck) there's little risk if the cameras damaged. And if you're very clever you can get some spectacular shots on a P&S. :)
i use a compact alongside my main cameras for weddings but it gets little work apart from this. it is great for detail shots, and i prefer using it over macro's on larger cameras. the compact allows very close up shots with a larger dof than i can get using a macro.
I have a my DSLR [400D] and a P&S [IXUS 80IS]. P&S gets used more than SLR does, as the IXUS lives in my handbag, and is my 'everyday use' camera

I've got a 40D and a G7. Use the 40D a lot more than the G7, but I'm going to start carrying the G7 again when I'm not planning on taking shots (when I go to work etc) just in case. Didn't dawn on me to do so until I read this thread. Used to carry it everywhere when I didn't have the dSLR.

Currently own:
DSLR - Nikon D90, Nikon D40
P & S - Kodak Z700, Samsung Omnia 5MP phone :D
Hardly use the P & S at all now...
I have a little casio P&S. It takes pretty good photos for a cheapie!
As much as I love my DSLR sometimes I just don't want to lug it around ;) I've got 4 kids and the assorted paraphernalia that goes with them so sometimes it has to stay home.
I have a Panasonic TZ7 which is a great allrounder. I use it alot when travelling for work and for quick snaps of the kids or going down the beach.

Like Kym I have original box brownie, 3 Slr's, 3 DSLR's and a P&S.
The point and shoot can work wonders especially for macro shots that I can't achieve with my DSLR due to not having a macro lens.
1 x TLR, 2 x SLR, 3 x DSLR, couple of compacts & P&S.
I just got a p&s for Christmas as I really wanted one for those times where taking the Dslr just isn't possible, I.e drunken nights out! And where the photos don't matter so much. The quality is nothing compared to the dslr but very handy at times.
You couldn't imagine how many parties my DSLR has been to. No place for a young P&S. :D

I have an Olympus E3 DSLR and an Olympus mju810 P&S which lives in my briefcase. The E3 is a beautiful camera, but is just a bit too big to cart around everywhere.
I also have an Olympus E300 which is on semi-permanent loan to a mate in Gympie and a little Olympus mju500 which is slightly bent, but still works..... sort of! ;)
And down the bottom of my cupboard is a Nikon F50D film SLR which I don't use any more.
Hey Larry, about time you sold some of your gear and made your bag lighter.

I have both. Most of my shots are from P&S since I only got a SLR a few months ago. My P&S is good since it is the size of my phone and is good for quick shots, places such as festivals and clubs and when I don't feel like carrying a SLR around on public transport all the time.

I try to take my 450D everywhere but when I can't I bring my teeny Canon A590 IS with CHDK installed, its a terrific little P&S when the light is good.
I use my P&S all the time - it's a Sea & Sea DX-1G (Ricoh GX100 in a housing) - as it's my set up for my underwater photography :). I think I get some half decent photos with this set up.
I also have a Canon 450D for my topside photography. I can't see myself going the full DSLR for underwater photography as I don't have the money to go a complete system - roughly another $7000 + if I wanted to use my 450D underwater.
There is a big 'them & us' in underwater photography between those with DSLRs and P&S systems - personally I think it's just the DSLR users trying to justify the expence of their systems :th3::th3::th3:

I bought a P&S before I went on atrip to Europe at the end of 2008. My son also went on a trip to Europe at the same time and he had just bought a DSLR. When we got back home we compared our images - I immediately went out and bought a DSLR (enough said) :)

Hey Larry, about time you sold some of your gear and made your bag lighter.
I gave up selling my equipment when I traded in the Olympus OM2n on the Nikon F50D. Big mistake! - Not because there is anything wrong with the Nikon, just because I regretted getting rid of an old friend.
Now the stuff I no longer use goes into a sort of "museum" I have in my study.
What goes into the big camera bag? - The E-3, mju810, all the lenses (including an old Tokina 28-85 on an OM mount), spare batteries and chargers, a Nikon SB25 flash unit, an Acer Aspire one netbook computer (for processing photos on the road), my passport..... What have I left out? It all makes for a very heavy bag! Fortunately, it is a Lowepro bag and is very easy to carry AND I have some smaller bags for when I don't want to take everything along with me. ;)
Sure do ..... The panasonic goes with me pretty much all the time.
Its the camera I take with me when I'm not going photographing. :th3:

I got a Sony Cybershot P&S before I got a dSLR - thought it would help me compose better shots (I was in a big rut that I'm not sure I'm out of!) without spending a fortune on D&P...but it didn't because I found it so little & fiddly, I never got comfortable with it! That said, it comes on every holiday with us (hubby's handy with it) as a back up, and we've got some fine pics out of it.
Both here - a 5DII, 50D and Ixus 80IS. I love the Ixus - it's very handy to have in my handbag all the time, and the image quality is surprisingly good. It has quite a good digital macro function, too. No comparison to the DSLRs, but it's certainly one of our better purchases.

I've got a DSLR, SLR and assorted P&S's that are usable. I've also got a couple old Kodak P&S that DH loves but can no longer get the film/developing done. I usually carry a little Olympus P&S everywhere with me - a left over habit from when the kids were little and cute (they are now big and always have their hand out for a loan :D)
Both, the Mrs mostly uses the P+S and my daughter inherited my 400D and kit lenses when I upgraded abit.
Canon 40D, Canon 30V, Panasonic Lumix TZ5 just ordered Canon G11 .. :)
We have both in this house... a 40D and a Olympus mju:300.
But we gave the Olympus to our daughter when we got into DSLR.
We have used it a few times though, when we just need a quick snapshot.
next poll should be..... those with both, do you ever use the p&s
I have both, but for those who question why, you have to remember that carrying an SLR everywhere just isn't possible or practical - but a P&S in the pocket can go anywhere.
The image you catch with the P&S will be far better than all the SLR pictures that you missed because you couldn't carry the SLR with you!!! ;)
I use the P&S on other occasions too ... all those times when people don't want a bloody great lens stuffed in their faces, or where a little subtlety is called for. Again, sometimes any picture is better than no picture.
I have a mixed bag which includes a DSLR (changeable lenses), a P&S, and a fixed ##### dslr. Then I have a variety of film based cameras including a 1934 leica.

Hi folks. It's been a while since I've been here, but I dare show my brazen face now in this thread. That 0.74% in this poll is me, though maybe it should be more than that paltry figure because I have three "only p+s".
Ricktas, it would be like a breath of fresh democracy to include such a challenge. Will it be soon? I'll be in it. As I trawled through this post I wondered at the degree of latent denigration "only p+s" that I discerned. I hope I was mistaken, though.
Am...
Yeah, I have both an SLR (40D) and a P&S (Canon S5IS). The 40D goes where I go. However, I also keep the S5IS as a backup or as a tool to get my friends interested in photography. Let's face it, your hiking buddies complain less about being stuck in the heat/cold when they are waiting for you to take your shots.. especially when they're doing the same with a camera they haven't carried! Also, when they take a great shot... they're usually more forgiving in future about "The needs of a photographer".

I've got both but I just never got rid of me old P&S, which is OLD! A Lumix DMC-LC33 with all of 3.2mp... Would like to upgrade to something a bit more updated but haven't really had a reason to...
I have a 2MP P&S on one Nokia mobile and a 5MP on the other Nokia mobile. I must say the 2MP is easier to use and I am surprised at how well the photos turn out. I have had a couple of days out in the Brisbane CBD, Southbank and on the river where I have deliberately used the small mobile phone camera exclusively. Great fun. Please search AAInternational photostream on flickr to see some of my mobile phone shots. As long as the photos are not to be blown up to anything larger than say a 6"x4" they are fine.

I am beginner at best with photography, if I could only have one camera it would have to be my p&s, to pack and lug my dslr and all the gear is a pain at times, when I can just throw my little ixus in the pocket. Just don't tell my girlfriend there is a way to get me to stop buying camera gear!!
With that said, I use my dslr 70% of the time, the p&s is just convenient, but there is nothing worse then getting somewhere and wishing you had lugged all the gear.
I have both
But since I have bought my DSLR I havn't touched the P&S
Although it is still handy to have for those late night occasions when the DSLR may be in danger ;)

P&S is essential and convenient. I shot most with Lumix LX3 while heavier DSLR is appropriate when speed is needed.
Both. P & S Canon Ixus. This is for general everyday use and the dslr is when I go somewhere special.
DSLR & the P & S. Have a Lumix TZ2, haven't really used the p&s since I got the DSLR.
A few times I have taken the DSLR out to places - I have found it intimidates people a little bit although I have been mainly using it to take pics of friend's little ones.

Currently I own a Nikon DSLR and a Sony T90 P&S and yes! I use both.
I love the P&S for the fact that you can capture the REALLY unexpected shots of your kids wherever you are!! (my P&S lives in my handbag)
I use both. A P&S is great to throw in your pocket for the unexpected, and when you want to travel light.
For a while I got into the habit of using nothing but the P&S. Then after a surprising time I picked up my DSLR. Euphoria flooded through me as I looked through the large, bright viewfinder, and reeled off a few shots. Sounds a bit weird, but that's what happened.

G'day all
Yeah - my 2-bob's worth...
Way back in 2003, I replaced my 2x film SLRs & lenses (24, 28-105, 85-300, 1000, 2xTC) with a Fuji S5000 (35-500mm equiv lens)
After a trip to Kakadu, I donated the SLRs & all the lenses to the local yr-11,12 college for their photography students to use ... the Fuji gave me everything I needed in one, compact unit. A magic camera which eventually died after 5yrs & about 90,000 frames
During this time for the magazine work I do from time-to-time, I got a Panasonic FZ-30. The Pany FZ-30 comes with almost all the dSLR bits & features, and a Leica 35-420mm lens (dSLR eq= 24-275) and it's all very good. Use it for lots of pano stuff (printed up to 1m wide), some magazine stuff (incl covers)
After the Fuji died it was replaced (for P&S stuff) with a Pany FZ-35 ... it's light, it's easy to carry and if it bangs on a tree or rock while I'm bushwalking, I can live with it :th3:
Regards, Phil
Is the consensus on owning a back up P&S camera the ability to shoot RAW(If so a good brand recommendation not to exceed $300 or a link to point me in the right direction)or is Jpeg enough without loosing to much details

I have a DSLR and a Canon A1 which I haven't used for years.
I also recently bought the Sony DSC-WX1 which I have in my bag when I go to work as I sometime go off on a sudden tram trip or something.
The DSC-WX1 is interesting and that's one of the reasons I bought it. It can take up to 10 photos per second in low light or camera shake conditions and merge them together to make one photo. You can also do this in panorama mode by sweeping the camera as it takes the photos and automatically stitches them together.
I tried to take panorama photos from a moving train straight through the window and the stitched photos come out weird, all chopped up.
I call P&S cameras PHS cameras (Push Here, Stupid)

Canon G9 bought as carry around and backup. The good bits: Macro, 28 equiv wide, heavy enough to stay stable, Image stablisation, RAW and SLR like control re AE TV Manual, and exposure comp +/- The bad: cant use the screen on a bright day very well and the view finder is not good enough to use all the time, ie emergency only. Anything above 200 ISO and quality goes down the drain.
ps, Someone dropped it for me, then someone else accidently stepped on it with a high heel (at a wedding) now got a very cracked screen although still works. Anyone know how to fix this, had quotes of around $200 but not worth it for me.

I voted both, P+S is always nice as a backup, or when you don't want your DSLR around :) Sony TX-1 here, does the job.
I have a waterproof P+S for when I go snorkelling in the Reef. Underwater housing for my SLR is way too expensive for a few happy snaps when I only go once a year into the water.

I have a piont and shoot (also phone), it was an easy and quick way to record and log egg deposition and hatching, also matings of my reptiles with dates.Good way for keeping instant proof for the authorities.only new to dslr
I've only got an slr at the moment, but am trying to find a decent film P&S. Although if Nikon does come out with an EP1 equivalent, I'll chuck a 50mm on it and use that

Yes I do, I have a Panasonic TZ7 and Canon 350d
DSLR [EOS 7D]
P&S [IXUS 90IS] > but this has now made its way to the missus handbag.
Have a Canon Powershot S5 which is used as a backup to the 40D. The P&S is used more for keeping visual records rather than for taking photographs if that makes sense.

At this stage its just the DSLR for me.
I have a D80 and a little Lumix P&S. I use the Lumix for festivals and other places I can't take the DSLR.

I have a Canon 60D and also an old Canon D60 and a few old film SLR's, and I have a Fuji W3 3D P&S.
It's good fun doing 3D photos and videos with the W3, and they look great on my 3D TV and on the 3D screen on the back of the camera.
It has 2 10mp sensors and 2 lenses etc and the photo quality is quite reasonable too, but I only use it for fun.
I saw a couple at Harvey Normans in Chatswood the other day for only $89.00, so go grab a bargain, as these were over $500 when they first came out.

Originally had various film cameras. Could see the writing on the wall for film and as we were about to embark on our first overseas holiday, I went out and bought a quite expensive Olympus C750 (was expensive at the time). This also had the Auto setting as well as various picture modes as well as being able to change the A/S/M settings. I was very happy with the photos that we took and have many holiday snaps that I was very pleased with. Then I decided to buy hubby a cheap camera to take to Melbourne for a weekend with our son, who was living over there at the time. I bought him a basic point and shoot Canon with a zoom lens and that took good photos too. I then bought my Olympus E520 with a twin lens kit. I am finding it harder to take good photos with it as it is much more complex, but I'll get there. Just need precious time to play with it and that is not easy in our present circumstances.
I love the idea of getting some of our better photographers to show us what they can do with a point of shoot.(go on, put all us novices to shame ) I have often wondered just how good they can be:) The camera that is, not the photographer (their photos on here prove just how good THEY are!!

I have both. My P&S is my trusty mobile which is great as I know I will always have it on hand for that quick shot. I agree with Ricktas we should have a P&S comp. I took all my shots on a W/End trip to the War Memorial with my mobile and was quite impressed with the quality. The photo below was shot with a Samsung Jet which I have since superseded with an HTC mainly because it was totally useless as a phone. Go figure :confused013

Not sure there's a clear enough line between P&S and DSLR to be meaningful. Some "compacts" to use another word, are more highly featured than DSLRs, and then there's the question of processing - cameras use so many different forms of "in camera" processing from zilch to a lot. I've always wanted to find a way of having a bunch of photographers all shooting with the same camera with no post processing - never found a practicable way though.

I am with you here, Bobt. To call a camera "point-and-shoot" is a not very useful description, and one that applies more to the habits of some types of photographers (some times).
"Compacts" is by far the better term, as it is the main factor in their design. After all, you can point and shoot DSLRs as well (as guns, cannons, big mouths).
I'd have to wonder what sort of competitiveness would be shown in a P+S comp, quick draw perhaps.
Am.
No, but I keep thinking I need a P&S. I like to have a camera on me while commuting etc and a DSLR is simply not practical enough (I tried, really tried).
I miss my old G7 that died! RIP old friend....

Just added a Nikon AW100 P&S so I can do underwater stuff when in Hawaii and cruising. Always had a P&S to complement the DSLR. Its not alweays convienent to carry the "big" camera around and the handbrake does not like to use the big camera much.

I have a DSLR, an old film one and several point and shoots, mostly Canon IXUS 's however, the latest being a Panasonic Lumix waterproof model. I also have some old film point and shoots that give a nice Lomo effect!:D Oh and of course my iphone 4s!!:D:D
