View Full Version : The ettamogah pub: Aka aussie post mag
One of my grandious goals for 2009 was to have a beer at the Ettamogah Pub AND photograph it of course..
So on the way home from yet another Dicky Beach Caloundra trip I took a right and just up the road from the Caloundra turn off on the Bruce Highway we found the place and had a coldie or 2 before the designated driver ( It wasnt me) drove us home to Brisbane.
People who remember the Australia Post Magazine will remember cartoon depictions of this pub in that mag. It was fun to see it in real life and have a beer there on the way home. I love the claims made about the benefits of drinking beer on the side of the pub wall, tickles ya tonsils alright ...

All it needs is Ned & his neddie.

Was supposed to be on our list of desitinations to visit while we were in qld recently too. Next time i guess lol, looks very interesting lol
Ah remember that from the Australian post days :) Be cool to go there :)
Nice shots David....although I wouldn't have thought they would have needed that many justifications for drinking beer...I would think for most, the last one pretty much covers it lol!

You got that right Lani: on a hot humid day in QLD NOTHING tastes better than a coldie :umm: as long as you dont overdose.

Yeah, it's long gone now. Ken Maynard, the guy behind the Ettamogah, passed away in 1998 if I remember right.
Yes, you are right-
The Ettamogah Pub is a cartoon pub that was featured in the now defunct Australasian Post magazine.
The cartoonist Ken Maynard, loving empty spaces and having nothing around him, enjoyed an area just outside of Albury at Table Top, named Ettamogah, thus christening the name of his now famous pub the "Ettamogah Pub" .
The first "Ettamogah Pub" of a chain of such pubs was built there and copies now exist in various parts of Australia including Sydney, the Sunshine Coast and Cunderdin, Western Australia.

I loved the magazine, the travel section each week was really interesting, I still have some in a folder somewhere. IT's awful when political correctness kills off Aussie icons.

It was sad when they (editors) decided to change the format of Australasian Post, and within a few months it disappeared completely. I really wonder why most of weekly magazines are now focused on Sex and Celebrity, I miss some of the older ones!
Great photos David. I had no idea there was more than one of these pubs around the place.
The original one even has a facebook lol
