how to use wireless flash as light source

hey all, while at a wedding, i noticed their photographer was able to use his flash wireless on a monopod but he used it as a continous light source, much like a torch(instead of continuous flashes), while he used his SLR to capture photos. This was during the first dance. Does anyone exactly know how to do this on a Nikon D700 and SB900 or SB600? I believe the flash needs to be on wireless mode and the D700 set to commander mode. But thats all I know.

It's most likely that the flash was not a speedlight, such as the SB900 or SB600, but a monoblock studio strobe, which generally come equipped with modeling lights, which enable you to visualise how the light will hit the subject before the flash goes off.

Yes, definately not a speedlight, probably a small video light

Unless he had the modelling light button stuck down on an SB-900. Though I can't imagine this is good for the flash.
