What body? Because the crop factor is an issue. 50mm on a 1.5 crop (75mm) is very nice. Others prefer 35 (~50mm), but I like it closer.

I tend to use a 35mm f2 quite a bit for general purpose stuff. I find it's a good focal length on my camera (1.6 crop). As for f1.4 vs f1.8 - it would be nice to have that extra stop, but for my style of shooting I can't really justify the price difference (so far).

A highly subjective question Jock, I feel it depends on the particular use that you want to put the lens to.
Are you after low light ability or after sublime out of focus areas in shallow depth of field photos, are $ a consideration?

My needs / wants may be different to yours but I thoroughly enjoy using the relatively cheap 50 F/1.8 and for a longer prime the Tamron 90 works for me. I would like to look at the "new" 35 F/1.8 as that seems to tick many boxes as a very usable lens for a DX camera.

i use my 25mm f1.4 nearly all the time at the moment loving the focal length (im fourthirds so its equivalant to 50mm on 135), i think the difference in low light performance between 1.8 and 1.4 is quite noticeable i was shooting with a 24mm 1.8 for a while but in low light the 1.4 will lock autofocus so much easier even in total darkness i can just shine my head lamp and it will lock whereas the 1.8 would struggle.

For D90, 35mm f1.8 is a great lens. It ticks almost every box and I have only heard one bad thing about it so far. That is front/back focus issue with some but not all.
