View Full Version : No Pixels challenge?
OK, I know that those here who don't mind a bit of a dabble in film are few and far between....but we do exist.
Anyone interested in doing a month long "No Pixels" challenge (I use the term "No Pixels" loosely. We all know that to be displayed, they must be pixelated).
The idea is simple. Set aside a month, shoot a roll of film and aim for a minimum of 1/3rd of the shots to be of reasonable quality. Develop, scan and post the shots that you deem to be useful.
Simple as.
Any takers?

The recent folders thread got me excited and you may notice I've changed my sig tonight.
So OK, I'm up for it and hang the processing expense. I may go even further and ONLY shoot medium format.
Thanks for the nudge!
Yep, as soon as I buy my camera.
Birthday next month so might be an excuse to spend :D
No hurry. While I would probably use 35mm, I have been looking for a MF on the side. Anyone know anything about Koni-Omega rangefinders :D
I don't have any digital cameras so this should be easy. Lets say we can only post scanned prints!
I have a slide dup attachment - so can process slides as well.
You mean I have to buy a roll of film?
Hmmmm.... Using AF lenses in manual mode :D

Not so sure on that one. I would say scanned negs and prints. Don't want people to have to fork out too much (if they don't really use it)

I just hope the shutter on my lil Rollei is still accurate :action53:
I will try tho.
Would slide film scanned by a lab be acceptable?

OK, have loaded up the Mamiya 645E with HP5, the Ziess Ercona 6x9 folder with HP5, the F4AS already had HP5 in it and for colour, I've loaded the Agfa Solinette 35mm folder up with some expired Fuji Reala 100.
Tally Ho !! Thanks for the inspiration Hoffy :th3:
I think so Ruth. I think the "No Pixels" thing is mainly about image capture.
I would also suggest minimal Post processing, to keep in the spirit of things (I.E., post process to a level that represents what the neg/photo looks like)

So, how are we all doing? Three days down and I had some fun on Saturday while "adventuring" with my family on a picnic outing. Chores around the house kept me busy yesterday and today was a regular work day.
No pixels stored by me so far. Hmmm, do we store them, create them, alter them, consume them. I need to ponder this a little longer.
And I must say, using my F4 on Saturday reminded me of just how fabulous it's viewfinder is compared to just about anything else I've ever used. It's like being in a nice comfortable IMAX theatre watching the scene before you move around. I must use it a lot more than I have recently.
Hoffy, I'm not sure "inspiration slumper" is entirely appropriate any more. ;)
okay hoffy, here are some scans of my latest pics
and the last three.
all six shots on fuji pro 400h and 800z shot at asa200 and asa500 respectively
oh, and i forgot about the provia 100f i did

Fast work Tom. I like the Lady at top in the first batch, the flower at bottom of second batch and the farmer? at bottom of the third batch. Great stuff !:th3:
I hope to finish the colour roll in the Agfa folder by week's end and have it processed on the weekend for scanning and posting.
The B&W will take a little longer. I can dev the film any time with the dark bag but I'm in very early stages of constructing my new darkroom here so printing will be a makeshift kitchen affair one weekend night towards the end of the month. See what I can come up with. I don't have a neg scanner unfortunately.
It's a lot of fun so far. :D
How do you scan your negs TOM? My scanner is really really crappy in comparison, though it cost $100.
i have a canon 8080f flatbed for my medium format scans. it cannot extract anywhere near all of the detail on the film but it still gives me those silky smooth tones. i get them drum scanned when required. i couldn't justify the cost for a cooscan 9000 (which has now been discontinued i think) which is really a low end film scanner. for the 35mm gear i use my nikon coolscan film scanner. it does a great job. scanning is a slow process but i do enjoy it. for my work i get the lab to scan as they develop. this cuts my post processing for weddings down to about 1 hour all up! as you know, with film there is no worries with blown highlights, or doing double raw conversions to bring out the dress detail and that rigmarole. ;)

I'd love a LS-9000. Sigh ... Just gotta dig those big negs.

I also have a dedicated Polaroid sprintscan 4000 but no SCSI card :(
Jumping the gun guys! I think we need to nominate a month. September? October?
Just got x5 Velvia 100F and x2 Velvia 50 for $19 :D
Time to find a landscape.

Umm, well, ok then. Any month is as good as another to me.
Just call this early work "practice". Yes, that'll do fine! :D

Set aside a month,
From the OP; I thought you meant a month, starting that day.
Sorry :confused013
In any, case, fun practice as I said above. It's not like we lose anything by being fast out of the blocks. :th3:
ahhh, its all good. I just thought it would be interesting to see what a bunch of people could do in the same time frame at the same time, thats all.
BTW, shooting film is fun, so make it as long as you want and whenever you want! I know that at the moment I am shooing only digi, but once this month is done, the film will get a workout.
In 1-3 days Ill have the Mamiya Sekor C 80mm N f1.9 and will be 100% equipped for active medium format shooting. Expect madness.
So I tested out the new 1.9 with some Velvia 100F and no light meter. Dont ask

Still cant get a sharp scan for the life of me so Im going to take my slides to the pros and keep scanning/printing B&W at home. One day Ill get that V700!

Thread Ping ... ECHO, ECHo ECho Echo echo ...
I had two colour rolls processed today, including the first-ever colour roll I've shot in the 1950's Agfa Isolette 35mm folder. Will scan some of them and post tomorrow.
Have any of you taken this challenge up yet or are you still waiting for a *defined* calendar month? Krys - how's the 80/1.9 madness coming along? :D
Still no digital images for me yet so I'm getting close to my month of film only.
Sorry peoples. I have had my head up my butt a little.
Lets do September. Spring is on the way and hopefully we could get some really nice work.
But don't let me stop you posting what you have thus far!
If I can somehow become good at printing all of a sudden I think it would be cool if we made this a real no pixels challenge and mailed each other some prints.
Maybe next year...
okay, here is my August submission thus far.
anybody else joining in????
I plan to scan in some prints and post them, as soon as I buy some 8x10 paper and print. For now I have some 5x7 and I am thinking of sending some 5x7 prints in envelopes to anyone who is interested, nothing serious as I am still a darkroom noob. Hopefully my street photography escapades result in some interesting photographs.
Nice photos there TOM (and woah, there is a lot of them!). What film?
ranges from hp5+ below in xtol, provia 100f for the gate/flower shot above, some neopan 1600 for the shots of the guys dressing as woman....there's all sort of different films in this mix.

Mine are still coming. Have some prints to scan and some film still in bodies to finish then process. My B&W will take a little while since I have not yet set up for printing here and I can't scan negs. Been working on a new dedicated darkroom design with my wife this weekend. Have the benches and sink, now need to build walls, get plumber and sparky in etc.

Count me in for September - I need to use my folder more!
BTW TOM - some lovely photos there :th3:
Thanks Matt.
Here's probably my last pic for August....75mm lens hand held at 1/8th sec.
I've created a thread for posting the pictures for September in the challenges area:

Been away the last 2 weeks for work. Now back, have to get some scanning happening for the colour prints I've already had processed, and some B&W processing done for the rolls I shot in this original challenge. Will move over to the Sept thread!
