View Full Version : lenses for new underwater housing
Have now ordered my new underwater housing, my dilemma is this was after a 14 mm
but lack of stock anywhere there are a few other options.
Canon EF 15mm f/2.8 Fisheye
Canon EF 20mm f/2.8 18
Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8 Type I & II
Canon EF 17-40mm F/4 1
Sigma 14mm F2.8 EX
Sigma 15mm F2.8
Sigma 15-30mm F
Canon EF 100mm f/2.8
Sigma 50mm F2.8 EX MACRO
These are the only lenses for the housing eg gear and dome
As I have not used these any of these lenses recommendations or pro and cons gratefully appreciated.
Thanks
Stu
Hi Para
Underwater photography is something I would like to try but so far the risk to my equipment has stopped me. I will look at getting a point and shoot with waterproof housing.
I guess being underwater getting the light would be the biggest hurdle so the bigger the aperture the better, the smaller the minimun focusing distance would be a consideration too I think but I'm only guessing.
Anyway looking forward to some pics of your gear and what it produces.
Peter
If you are looking for a good point & shoot and housing have used a g10 good results would suggest a good strobe though

Hi Para, i guess it comes down to the type of pics your going to be taking, macro, wide..?? and also what the water conditions are like, how much vis are you normaly getting. I found that i used to shoot mostly 20mm wide, and more macro, 1:2 and 1:3 That was on a S&S MMII with twin YS 90 strobes. On my Nic III and V i only used a 15mm.
I would lean more towards the Canon EF 17-40mm F/4 1. That you listed
Peter
I Have a Nikon D80 now, and the next peice of kit i buy will be a housing. I think the housings now, Subal and Ikalite (plus a few the rest) are all fantastic, spend the few extra dollars for the moisture detector (if its not standard). Could be a life saver
Treat the housing and O rings like a loved one, and the best piece of advice i got many years ago was, Remember its not IF you have a flood, it WHEN you have a flood, so i treated all my underwater gear to the point of being O.C.D.
Got hold of a 14mm which is what was my 1st choice.
cool, what housing did you get.
hope to see some of your pics soon.
Got a aquatica should be here in 2 weeks.
thats hot!! I got quoted for one of these at OzTek dive expo but couldn't afford to be without my car that i'd have to sell to buy it!!

very nice, there are so many brands around now.. well done on the new kit, lets see some pics......when it gets here, i bet you cant wait.
Hi all, would love to hear about peoples experiences with the various housings. There's a few companies out there making these things and I would really like to know how they perform.
have had experience with ikelite and aquatica have worked on a dive boat as a underwater tog
Aquatica I believe to be the nuts........ of dslr housings we had 2 togs per boat 2 boats never heard of flooding etc apparently the british navy use them but dont quote me.

Ikelite are a good housing but in the last year have seen 2 customers housings flood they work with pressure against domes to make water tight.

If I can help in anyway let me know what camera is it for?
