See it here on Strobist:

I just ordered it, sounds like a cracker, particularly if you have Nikon. He is the king of strobism with small flash if you don't know him.

hmmm...I can't find it there!
Once you get onto the bigwentertainment.com.au site, go to books, then to photography.
You should see it there, if not type the authors name into search and up it comes.:)
Thanks Nick for the heads up, just ordered one too.
Thanks for the promo code Ehor. :th3:
Just realised why you made the comment "now we wait" NAM, 14-20 days before despatch!
So what's the difference between the imported one ($73.46) vs the Aussie one? The imported one is 320 pages and the Aussie one is 272 pages...hmmmm:confused013

OH CRAP! I paid $57 to have it delivered by Amazon from the States. I didn't for one moment think that it might actually be available in Australia as they usually aren't. CRAP! :angry0:

they both trace back to the same ISBN-13 so hopefully we're going to be getting the right book
there seem to be a two variations on the subtitle: Creative Applications of Small Flashes vs Big Light from Small Flashes

I'm not sure but I'll be mad if we get ripped off a chapter or two.
Let's just hope they are using a smaller font or bigger pages.... or it was a typo.
Here's the direct link to BigW guys:

I can't wait to get it even though I'm a Canon shooter :D
Yeah hopefully :) The one that lani mentioned at fishpond.com.au is the 320pg version for $41 delivered.
Oh well I've send off an email to Joe asking about it. Wonder if I'll get a reply :p

i have irdered mine too:th3:
And how cool is the shot of "The birth of a speedlite", shot on tungsten in daylight. Hopefully the wait will not be too long. I ordered mine from bookware.com.au for $38 as well.

Lets hope the imported one has a total page count and the aussie one just the pages number 1-272 and have not included the count for title page, indexes and other misc. stuff. That is what i am counting on.
Should be a good read...

Just discovered the Joe McNally books, there seem to be two. The cheaper one is a slightly different title and from visual images on-line - seems smaller.
I found both on line - the other one was $72 and the one i ordered is $37 - still think it will be very useful.
Just got an email from Fishpond saying mine should be here on Tues or Wednesday ... yay:)

I have it on backorder from Dymocks at 39.95 + 5 bucks post. They said it could take a while but I'm in no hurry. Brolly, stand and flash clamp on their way. Looking forward to learning some new stuff.

Hi guys,
got my copy a few weeks ago. ordered on the monday from amazon UK and received it that thursday, awesome.
It's a great read, lots of tech detail in this one. Lots of gear plugs , he loves the sb900 but still has uses for the sb800, considering the 900 doesnät fit in a whole bunch of coldshoes. My 900 wonät fit in my justin clamp, metal short brolly swivels from midwest, etc. basically it'll only go on the camera or in the plastic foot.
He uses the su800 commander unit all the time with an SC cord to allow him to hold it at different angles to reach all the flashes. All of that will be unnecessary once the new nikon pocket wizards come out but until then, line of sight is still required, especially at the distances he places the SB's from the camera.
Got mine today, fantastic read by the looks of it.... :):)

Damm....I ordered from Fishpond the same day as you and they told me they won't even expect it to reach them until April 11....what the?

So can someone confirm the difference between the 272 page and 320 page editions?
Apparently there are 3, not 2. A 272 page, a 303 page, and 320 page one. I wanna know if there are any differences between them before taking the plunge.

Mine is the 303 pager (Amazon) but don't know what the difference is.
All I can say is I am a little sick of the terms "puppys"
Mine is 303 too from Fishpond, i emailed Fishpond asking them about the different versions and their reply was that they are not aware of different versions, so who knows????

has anybody on the forum got the 272 page australian version? ...at least we'd have 2 to compare...
Maybe the 272 pg version was a typo?? I emailed Penguin Publishing directly and they confirmed that the Australian version they are distributing is 303 pages.

It's a bit weird. The copy I got, published by "New Riders" comprises:
pages i to xiv = 14 pages
2 pages apparently without numbers
pages 1 - 256
= 272 pages
Whatever the pages, I'm very impressed with the nook.
Oh, and as to a "new" book: it's marked as published January 2008.
Happy Easter.
still waiting hey are out of stock

so nobodys got the penguin one?
Is the title different? The 272 is something like "creative applications for small flashes" and from the quick summary its aimed at ameteurs/enthusiasts where as the "big light from small flashes" is more aimed at pros?
...I might be very wrong though...
Anybody else order from BigWentertainment I keep getting emails to say they can't get stock?....even thought hey supposedly had stock when I ordered it ages ago. :confused013
I guess I'll keep waiting, may as well now after this long. This isn't a problem isolated to them, I ordered a kelby book through seekbooks, and rang to confirm they had it in stock before I ordered...yet, once again...emails kept being sent pushing back the delivery date. Bit between a rock and a hard place cos none of our local booksellers stock the titles i am after, and they take 6 weeks to order them in.

Lani. Give Fullers a try. I know the owner, and both himself and his staff are really goods, they at least are willing to give you accurate information about availability etc.
i am in the same boat have email to say
Thanks for your email. Unfortunately, there has been a
slight delay from the supplier of HOT SHOE DIARIES: CREATIVE
APPLICATIONS OF SMALL FLASHES. We are now expecting the book To come
into us within the next week to two weeks.
they have already took it off my credit vard last month:cool: so who is fullers rick and do they have a website
I got the Kelby photoshop book and the Hot Shoe Diaries from Fishpond within a couple of weeks from date of order.
I know it isn't the right thing to do, but i never use the local shops,I simply can't afford to. i find they are at least $10-20 per book, sometimes more than the online shops.

That sucks. Order it direct from the US, you might get it quicker and cheaper, hope it works out alright.

Care to share your results from reading the book ?
Camera -EV, flash +EV, on camera bounced

Sheez, you're into it already Darren. :D I've only had a chance to flick through it so far.
Nice result though, I'm assuming it's straight from camera? The skin tones are great.
Not exactly, ran through LR and a small tweak
I liked the first chapter about his default settings re rear curtain sync, always on A and always Matrix and using diff combos of + and -EV on camera and flash, so, had a quick play with a few settings

I've just started reading it and found that his setting were interesting.. But yet to try it out.
Just need 3 more SB800's and I'll be set.

my book looks beat up and tattered already - because i've been taking it with me everywhere. turns out i set my camera up quite similarly to him. the book really inspires you to try stuff out. i wish i had a bajillion speedlights and a model like risa!

Yeah well what you do is buy a roll of good contact - not the cheap sticky stuff that attaches itself to everything else, but the book. :) I reinforce the spine and cover page edges with strips of contact before covering. I have purchased a few bird and photography books of late (including the Joe McNally book). I noticed that these books are not put together well and will deteriorate with use. I keep telling my brother to give me his bird book, so I can repair it, can ya hear me brother....- but he can't part with it....Working in a library has its perks, you know....
My copy arrived today. Only took a week (from Big W online), so wasn't too bad compared to some other people's experiences. Only had a brief flick through so far, but it looks pretty good.
One thing that caught my eye was the setup sketch on page 273. Notice how the author refers to himself? As...
...wait for it...
...Mongo! He even uses third-person speak!! The exact words are "Mongo shoot fasion. Mongo like". That's the Mongo we all know and love!
Now we know who Mongo really is - it's Joe McNally! :D
