Canon LP-E6N battery replacement

Hi all,

Just gearing up for a trip to the Victorian Surf Coast and Flinders Island. The battery menu on my 5Ds says both my LP-E6N batteries should be replaced.

Obviously Canon OEM batteries are the go but they are $190 each.

Hahnel equivalent is $80.

Thoughts or experience with equivalents please?

My first three Canon Cameras, 20D 40D and 5DMk11 spare batteries were never Canon ones and I had good mileage out of the 3 of them
Try Teds Cameras where mine came from many years ago sorry cannot remember the brand name, and I see on the JB HI FI Site they are $69.
Do they make them today as good as they did then I cannot answer that.

Now days I am a Olympus user and last year I replaced all my E-M1 and E-M1 Mk 11 batteries buying then from Better Batts sorry cannot see your ones on their site.
I did have to buy a battery charger for the 1st one about $20 but the MK 11 ones fitted the Olympus Charger.
So check that out if you do get the cheaper brands for your Canon

I have bought after market batteries of various brands for all my camera over many years - never had a problem. Last set I bought were from better batteries - so far so good.

The Canon OEM is $190.
A Jupio or Hahnel equivalent is $90-110 with a very similar spec.
The better battery option is $30.50 but is 1500 mAh (or 1600 depending where you look) vs the above 2000+.

I think I'll take a bet each way and go the Hahnel.

As for the specs... - Hello...! :confused013 - There were absolutely none worth talking about.

I'd say go for the most powerful one (the Canon brand, I guess), but remember that
you still have the spare old ones.They might still keep going in spite of the menu
advice.

As per usual I find nothing is easy........

It seems my Canon OEM charger is not capable of fully charging the new 2000mA Hahnel as the best charge I can get is 65% according to the 5Ds internal battery monitor.

The old OEM batteries are 1800mA and the same voltage.

So I could buy a new charger for the new battery but that seems over kill. I'll see what performance I get out of a new 65% charged battery.

How much is a new charger? If it's a reasonable cost, at least you can use it to still
charge the old batteries as well.

The trouble with these things is that they rely on different methods to determine when a
battery is fully charged. (Don't quote me, but) some rely on temperature, and some on
a certain voltage (or other power feedback) reached, before they switch off charging.

I'd say - definitely M O, mind - that if you get new batteries you would definitely need a
charger that's capable of properly charging them, otherwise you risk affecting the life
of the new batteries, such as through "memory effects".

I was all set to buy a new charger but this week I found myself out and about with the camera so I tested the battery (at the max charge I could get of 65%) and got about 60 shots before it ran flat (~2% charge). Back on the OEM charger and in 3 hours it was 100%. Next morning I got ~290 shots with ~28% charge left. Recharged again today back to 100%.

So I assume the original charge issue related to battery memory and the fix was to run it flat, or almost.
