WD (western digital) has put out a statement asking you to turn off and disconnect your My Book from the internet. (not all models are affected at this stage). It seems there is some malicious code doing the rounds that is wiping the external hard drives.

I looked up its specs. Elsewhere it is listed as a low-end NAS.
Only WiFi and Ethernet connectivity and no USB.
The default userid and password are:
Default username
admin
Default password
admin
I wonder if users who bothered to change these have been affected :umm:
" " " other types of NAS are as vulnerable?

Horrible, actually.

Post 110 in the WD community (above) says that [the hackers] issued a factory restore script
Post 115 has some sobering and sage advice - esp. that he did not have cloud feature enabled
and that he had backed up elsewhere anyway, so he got hacked but saved his data
Another post talks about the danger of IoT devices - which sounds like the acronym could use an
ID- prefix
