View Full Version : Testing out the new Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1 L IS USM

I traded in some old EF lenses and a 7D Mk II which I no longer seemed to be using and these helped fund the purchase of a Canon RF 100-500mm f/4.5-7.1 L IS USM.

I took it to the Mt Coot-tha Botanic Gardens in Brisbane this morning to give it a work out with the Canon EOS R6, and was very happy with the results from both - the weight saving over my 5D Mk IV and 100-400 was quite noticeable, and much appreciated.:)

Cool, been waiting for someone to post some pics, thinking of doing the same thing(selling stuff that doesn't get used anymore)....

Thank you Gaza, I was very pleased with the image quality and the relative lightness of the overall set up.:)

Thanks Mybludog, the lens is certainly as good as the Canon 100-400 Mk II although a little slower at F7.1 compared to F5.6.:)

Exceptional detail in all of these Dennis.

Thank you Glenda, the Dragon posed nicely and the Grebe surprised me with its catch.:)

I checked my Lightroom Catalogue and it indicated that the 7D Mk II had last been used some 3-4 years ago, with a similar story for the lenses, so out they went and in with the new.;)

Thanks Cris, I appreciate your comments. I figured that having stuff sitting at home, not being used and devaluing, was not a good idea.;)

Good day Dennis,
Beautiful shots and pics.
May I ask, how do I see the whole photo please?
The edges are always trimmed off.
Thank you and regards, Journeyman (also Dennis)

Hi Dennis

Do you mean:

1. View the 1200x900 pixel images posted above at 1200x900 on your Device/in your Web Browser, or
2. View the original full size 5472 x 3648 pixel file from the camera?

Notes:
(i) I understand that the maximum pixel size I can upload to this Forum is 1200x1200 pixels.
(ii) I do not have a website where I upload my photos, so I cannot upload an original at 5472 x 3648 pixels image file.
(iii) If it helps, the EWD in Photo #1 is approx a 80-90% crop of the full frame.

Cheers

Thanks Dennis,
When I see photos within the forum they seem to be cropped.
eg. The lizard has no head, the galah is missing his tail.
Could it be that I am using an iPad or is there something that I am missing? This happens with all of the pics I view.
The new lens is certainly providing clear photos,
Kind regards, Journeyman (Dennis)

Hi Dennis

An iPad uses iOS as an operating system and Safari as a Browser, but I would have expected that you should be able to scroll across the webpage, left to right, as well as up and down so that you can see/read content that overspills the viewing screen. I'm not sure if there is a setting in iOS or Safari that enables scroll bars?:confused013

If not, you might have to view the Forum on a PC or Mac where you should be able to view the image at its posted size.:)

I went for a walk in the late afternoon through the Roma Street Parklands in Brisbane and continue to be very impressed with this optic, which is fast replacing my Canon 100-400mm Mk II. The max F7.1 at the 500mm end is not proving to be as much as a limitation (in good light) as I imagined it would be. All taken at the 500mm end.

Good day Dennis,
Top photos as always. Lovely crisp results. There seem to be great parks around the south east corner.
Have you used the 100-500 at night? I am asking because I had a couple of focus issues with my 100-400 + 1.4 converter a couple of nights back. Eventually find out where I made the error. Although a crop frame camera. Possibly more timed required at night?
Kind regards, Journeyman

Hi Dennis

No, I haven't used the RF100-500mm under dark conditions but I do understand that on the EOS 5R and EOS 6R, they should perform quite well in low light levels. I think the IS can give you up to 6 stops, with fully charged batteries, etc.

Hi Dennis

Hmm, it was a while ago but our pool is 9 metres long so using that as a yardstick, I reckon it was probably 2 pool lengths away, so between 15 and 20 metres at a guess.:)
