I have been noticing, particularly in shots with lots of detail, that applying a bit extra denoise, often makes the image look better, even sharper. I think it's because low level noise can interact with fine detail making it look less detailed.
Denoise filtering it a little bit harder, first, then applying regular sharpening, local contrast, etc, achieves a better final result. I am using Darktable, but I imagine it would be the same in any PP suite.
