2017 may be a tough year for the company.

It would be interesting to read a transcript of the board meeting when the decision was made.

I have felt for a while that the smartphone has been gobbling up the market for a lot of these niche products. Perhaps Nikon have decided to stop trying to 'be all things to all people' and made a decision to concentrate on what they know, how to produce a really god DSLR, albeit with the odd hiccup.

I'm waiting to see what they come up with this week at CP+ 2017.

Extraordinary loss is just an accounting term for a once off issue and is mostly due to restructuring. Due to the downturn in camera sales across all brands mostly due to camera phones, Nikon has had to shed over 1,100 employees and part of the loss is due to redundancies and payouts etc. Don't let internet forums doomsayers get you concerned, this sort of thing happens in many companies from time to time.

Love the media hype. Remember back in 1992 Westpac reported a loss of $1.5bill... and its still going strong.

Every company must evaluate and evolve with the times. Hopefully this is just a bump in the road for them.

Nikon remains OK. Their Lythographybizz is not doing fine.
There one dutch competitor , ASML, which is marketleader with 90% market share in semiconductor lythographymachines, making Nikon and Canon Lytho not doing so well.

The Nikon photography bizz is doing fine.

Yes and no!

Semiconductor Litho sales were down(and they recorded a loss), but FPD(flat panel display) Litho sales were up significantly.

Those precision equipment figures were up(overall) from last year, but are much lower than previous years, or the average over the previous years.

Imagining sales(in moneytary terms, not unit sales) .. it's just happens to have dropped back to about 2007-08 levels.
They survived well enough in the years leading up to 2007, so there's no reason to think they can't survive at their current sales levels.

No argument there. I can't see why Nikon wouldn't survive either. But it is tough times for them and to say that "The Nikon photography bizz is doing fine" is just not true and the annual report shows that.
