Any LR junkies out there. Will putting my pics on an SSD speed up 'library' loading?

Not sure what you are asking but I've just bought a Samsung 850 Pro 256GB to use as my OS disk as my old Samsung 128GB was chockers.

I'll clone the old disk onto the new one and use the old one for my photo files. Should load heaps quicker than the WD spindle drive they are currently on.

But so many factors to take into account.

And .... the big AND!

Photos usually take up heaps of space, and they grow in size.

SSDs are notoriously bad in terms of space/dollar, when compared to mechanical HDDs.
So it's a balance between how much space you need, how much money you're willing to invest.

But on the mechanical HDD side of things, you can still pick up relatively fast drives for half decent money.

What you'd want to look into firstly is how fast is your current mechanical drive.
That is, you want to measure it's read speed(more than anything else, if access times are important .. what most programs do.
They read the data off the drive. Usually faster read times also translate to faster write times as well(but not always).

Use a bit of readily available software to determine how fast your drive is.
if it's slow(latency as well as transfer rates) .. then maybe a cheap quick HDD can help to speed things up a bit.

Just finished the cloning and the new drive is up and running, albeit after Windows threw a hissy fit.

Arthur, I think I have the bases covered with drives.

1. Samsung 850 Pro 256GB SSD
2. Samsung 840 Evo 128GB SSD
3. WD 2TB 7200rpm
4. WD 500MB 7200rpm
5. WD 500MB 5800rpm

I'll wipe the 128GB SSD and use it basically for photo storage.
