C'mon, convince me to buy an 80D :)

Having decided on a new canon body, I have been researching it to death (as I always do with a new purchase). Then I went back and read my post from a few days ago here... http://www.ausphotography.net.au/forum/showthread.php?147886-760D-vs-other-options

Seems reading between my own lines I really want an 80D. Just need that kick to convince myself to spend the money :) They have the small kit cheaper than the body alone at the moment - though what I would do with another 18-55mm I am not sure :)

I have always learnt from experience if you can afford the price then the pleasure of using the equipment quickly replaces the procrastination of the purchase. If would seem by all accounts this 80D is even a better buy than the 7DMII and a significant improvement over the 70D.

Yes, and my other alternatives were those, plus the cheaper 760D.

You are right, once the pain of the decision and cost is over, you quickly forget that and enjoy the quality item.

All I am going to say is Yes get another body, that is why I bought the 7D MK11 perfect for Birds and my Birding lens stays on it all the time, so no dust bunnies as yet :crossed:
I still have my old 5D Mk11 and my even older 40D that I swap around when I want to shoot macro or flowers.. Both would be close to the 150,000 shutter count by now.
Whatever you pick I am sure it will be the right one, remembering now there is a lot more on the cameras today than there were years ago so more to learn and remember.
And it can get confusing at times especially when you want to view the images, I still forget when I shoot with one of my older cameras. The there is the Olympus E-M1 so different again :nod:

Yes, probably will stick my Sigma 150-600mm on the new one, and leave it there most of the time. That's what first prompted me to want a second body initially - not having to swap it for the 18-250mm all the time.

Just realised it is actually a better lens. It's the STM version vs my IS version. The non-rotating filter is worth it alone, and the quieter, faster AF as well. Some people even say the IQ is better.

Oh, I AM convinced it's the lens I want. More money than I wanted to spend - I'm a bit of a tightwad. But yeah, will be hitting the shops in Perth tomorrow or the day after.

To me (without looking at all the specs again) if you were into birding & especially BIF (bird in flight) then the 7D II would probably be the better choice but...... if you want more versatility with the articulating touch screen (event & street shooting, macro & other uses) then the 80D would likely be a better option.

Yes, have read similar elsewhere. The way I rationalised it, looking at the 7dii advantages -

. I don't want/need GPS.
. The larger sensor pixel area isn't really a n advantage, the 80D has better noise figures due to it's newer DIGIC 6 processor I presume
. faster shooting rate (10fps vs 7) would be nice but not a deal killer
. I usually only use one focus point - the centre. I am sure for following action, like a bird for BIF shots the 7dii is superior.

But I am already stretching my budget, blown it in fact - you should see my wife's expressions, so...

I did the same, went to JB HI Fi and got the 80d with the 18-135mm USM for $1699. Upgrading from the canon 550d. I actually felt physically ill from handing over that many $50 notes..lol
