Ultra wide for a FF Nikon

I am looking for an ultra wide for a Nikon D750 and being just a hobby photog and no longer working, can't justify the price of the Nikon 14-24 and even the Tamron 15-30, although it is quite tempting. Has anyone had any experience with the Tokina AT-X 16-28 f2.8 pro fx? I do want a fast lens to use for star photography. We do have the Tokina 11-16 f2.8 which is a good lens. I have read it is usable on FF at 15 an 16 without too much loss in IQ on the edges and not too much vignetting. But, if shooting stars, one of us will still have the D7100 and need the 11-16.

I find the Samyang 14mm f2.8 up to the task for night shooting.

Even after hitting the deck it still does the job.

Kev - I did look at the Samyang but only manual focus scares me a bit. The older I get the worse my eyes and not sure I trust them to manual focus. Probably not too bad for stars but I also want to be able to use the lens for landscapes and building interiors when travelling.

John - They look good - will now have to check out where I can get the best price.

Another Tokina 16-28 user here. :action66:

Pros:
Very sharp in the centre at F/2.8
Very very little distortion at 16mm and if you do encounter any it is easily corrected in the 'puter.
Colour rendition is very good.
Focus is accurate, quick and pretty silent.
Price is good.

Cons:
If you need / want to add filters you really only have the the extremely large and fairly expensive systems that are on the market.
Large amount of focus shift when stopping down. Refocusing at each and every aperture shift is a must.
I have seen reports of the auto / manual focus clutch breaking but have not had any issues with ours.
Sometimes I find myself asking if 16mm is wide enough, 14 or 12 becomes appealing at times. :D

Thanks Andrew. I'd love to go wider but the Nikon 14-24 is so expensive and the Sigma recommended by Rick not fast enough for one of the purposes. I think the 16-28 would be pretty close to my Nikon 10-24 which I use on my D7100 and I've found it wide enough on most occasions.

Thanks Kev. I agree it sounds like a fabulous lens and gets good reviews and I like both my Tamrons, 24-70 and 70-200.

From what I understand the Nikon 20mm f/1.8 is fairly popular with star gazers. I got one as a wide and it's phenomenal. It's considered sharper than the Nikon and Sigma 20mm f/1.4's at 1.8.

The samyang 14mm is chipped for nikon cameras, so a litttle white dot appears in the viewfinder when in focus. Think it is a great lens for the money. But yes, the filter system would cost a bit more. Cheers.

BTW, this is the 20mm f/1.8 at f/2.8 1/60 ISO400 handheld on the D750. The thing I really like about the 20mm f/1.8 is that it's extremely small, only marginally bigger than the 50mm so you can carry it around without much effort. When I travel or I am doing street photography, I find it's easy to carry the 20 and 50 because they are both lightweight.

The filter issue with non screw lenses is pretty much over, I made a holder from Ebay bits for less than $50,
and now my mate made me a better one on his 3D printer. No more hundreds of $ for the adaptor. Takes 100 x 100

After much vacillating I have bitten the bullet and gone for the Tokina 16-28, which I've ordered today. We're supposed to be going on a star shoot in a couple of weeks time - hopefully this rain will have disappeared and we will have nice clear skies. May have to contact John on how to create a filter holder to use it for landscapes. :D I'm one of those females whose mechanical knowledge/ability is basically zero. I'm then going to order the Nikon 20 1.4 in a couple of months time. I really like the idea of it for a walkaround lens and also the fact that it takes 77mm filters which I have quite a few of.

I assume you mean the 20 1.8 not the 1.4. Minor price difference of about $1500 :p
