View Full Version : When is enough ...?

The week before Christmas I bought a d5200 with the 15-55 and 55-300 lenses for $520.
Today I bought a d3100 with another 15-55 and a 50mm lens for $270, 'for the rest of the family to use :)'
I'm stalking people with 35mm nikkor's on gumtree and ebay trying to get one for less than $160.
Admittedly I'm not using the 55-300, and my 15-55 is kept between 20 and 35 90% of the time.
This hobby is like stereo equipment, and guitars, and home workshops...

Careful .... I recently purchased a Nikon ( Nikkor ) 55-300 though eBay and it had fungus in the lens. I did get my money back, but I am hoping it did not spread. Now I am without.

How careful does one need to be about lens fungus? Is it a full on quarantine and nuke the area problem?

Fungus in lenses is the same as fungus (mushrooms). They spread using microscopic spores. Put a lens with fungus on a camera, and then swap to another lens and you risk transferring spores to the camera and the other lens. How much risk? That depends on heaps of factors, including humidity etc. Better to err on the side of caution and keep any lens affected by fungus away from all your other gear.

The 35mm f/1.8 lens arrived yesterday.
The lower f stop makes a massive difference in low light from the f/3.5 on the kit lens.
I'm really impressed.

Check out the edge sharpness with shots taken at widest aperture.

I feel better knowing other people have this as well. It doesn't stop me buying stuff, but I feel better

Enough: A word related to quantity. Photographers never seem to reach the goal as there is always more.

From your username I'm guessing you're a guitar man too.
When you need a Tele, a Tele with p90's, a Casino copy, a single strat, a hb strat, parlour acoustic, big bodied acoustic, and a bass. Just in case. :confused013 I've been down that road too, had about 13 at one stage, including a couple of homebrew tele's. But I digress...
The d3100 still hasn't arrived... I'm losing my normally short patient streak.

13? Impressive! Doesn't sound like an unlucky number in this case :D I'm down to 4 (Strat, Les Paul, acoustic 6 string Fender and an old 12 string acoustic Maton) and hadn't planned on buying any more but lately I've been pricing Gibson SG's
I hope the d3100 arrives soon. If you have tracking available on your shipment, I should point out that continually refreshing the web page doesn't make it arrive any faster - not that I'd ever do that.

I presume you mean the 18-55mm kit lens, coz I'm pretty sure Nikon doesn't produce a 15-55mm (I could be wrong).
I started out getting a prime lens, then another and another because in terms of getting a large maximum aperture lens for relatively low cost, primes are hard to beat. The only hassle is having to carry a few, and having to change lenses.
Now that you've got the 35/1.8, you might like to consider the 85/1.8 as a telephoto portrait lens :)
It can achieve pretty good background separation when taking half-body portraits.
Or if you like shooting landscapes or interiors, might I suggest an ultra-wide angle lens, something that offers you a 10 or 12mm focal length for your D5200 :D
such a long way to go... sigh

There's always room for one more......
I can just see how much of a gear junkie im going to be or how much my budget will allow me to be!

Do like the many of us have done .. rid yerself of the other half!
(with the exception that, if the other half also has GAS!! :D)
strangely I found once the other half went AWOL .. I found 50% more finances to satisfy my NAS(GAS, but for Nikon-ish related gear!)
For me, once I have everything from Nikon's 6mm f/2.8 all the way up to and including their 2000mm f/11, I reckon I'll have satisfied my quest for enough .. only because there's probably nothing else that exists to have!
.. then what?
And don't tell me that I have to start using it all .... :action53:

Suppose use it or lose it doesn't work. Such a waste.

Great value lens. Very versatile. As you said great for low light situations.
...and then wait till you get into lighting and modifiers....stands...BOOMS...TRIGGERS....Underwater housing...DRONES.... Being a photographer is financially worse than being addicted to crack. ;)
