View Full Version : How's the NBN working for you?
After years of two tins and a string internet we are not listed on the NBN roll out site as having anything planned for our tiny hamlet.
A month or so ago the NBN mob placed an ad in the local paper informing us of a public meeting to outline a proposed fixed wireless tower ( or two ) to serve this town. It so happens that where they advertised placing one of the towers is on a patch of land that we drive by almost daily and according to google earth is 390 metres away from our house. Despite there still being zilch on the NBN site about any connections in our area, when I drove down the road yesterday I noticed a new power cable dangling in the air on a pole and a freshly dug and filled in trench leading up the road to a pegged out area in the paddock where they said they wanted to build a wireless tower.
Despite their website being in total denial we may even have a bit of the NBN here sooner rather than later it seems. :D
Despite "only" being 25 down and 5 up it still has to be better than the current ( getting worse by the day ) connection.

Been told not to expect the NBN. Originally I was planned to get it in Dec 2013. They then chopped my suburb in half. Half have it, and the rest of us have been told there are no plans to connect us.

It's NOT NBN, but I typically get 30 down and about 1.5 up.
But that's not to praise the "DIS"service providers. My pet HAYTE!!! is the paucity of "service"
- oh, sorry! Their service provision is EXCELLENT in taking your money there - in non-metro areas.
OK, have POSSUM-weak service, but don't CHARGE LIKE A BULL for it!!
Anyway, the ultimate rationale is: NOBODY can ever use UNlimited internet, and as for "overseas calls", well,
who ya gonna call? Yer wouldn't get nuffin if it cost ISPs ANYthing. So we continue to PAY for what we DON'T get,
and generally think how great and clever and connected and... BOOF-headed we really are.
You're lucky, Andrew! You KNOW your getting CARP! The rest of us dream we're getting SALMON!:(:eek:
... and the rest of us have been told there are no plans to connect us.
We were reasonably high on the original roll out and have been told the same while smaller towns close by seem to be getting it sooner than us ( I think).
While I didn't much like the previous government ( nor our current one) I think the original proposal for the NBN was one of their better ideas. Yes it costs money, but Netflix is just the start. And most will get NBN Slimline now.

Well this is my supposed 100Mb/s download speed on NBN.
I did get to 95Mb/s download early on in the piece.

my PC is too slow to maximize even this speed anyway.
In all honesty, 20mb/s is more than enough for the average Joe.
NBN does drop out several times a week though. Not quite as bad as my old DSL.
But given the Telstra wifi router has worse coverage than the old one, can't get the TV to connect to wifi now.
Damn these first world problems...Might have to run some cable.:lol2:
PS. Did I mention that we were the first "overhead cabling" trial group in Townsville
Hooray..our cables will get taken out in an average cyclone, so I will have to ring out on my mobile until the base station goes flat in 2 hrs:D
My experience with NBN has been variable. At work we have NBN and normal use such as web browsing and email retrieval has been mostly unchanged, even at times dead slow (i.e. @ kid O clock = after school and early evening & holidays).
Large downloads and uploads however happen very quickly, files that used to take 20 minutes to download arrive in 4-5 minutes, a bonus for us as we download large software and firmware files.
At home I've seen a decline in my ADSL performance as the NBN network is progressively rolled out, that's also the experience I seem to hear from our customers, ultimately bandwidth is shared and faster speeds on NBN seem to have come at the expense of slower connections for other users.
I work in the Communications industry (mostly telephony) and spend time sorting out the problems left after NBN cutover. Dodgy workmanship, lack of knowledge by installers, carriers and those implementing cutovers on behalf of the carriers are all issues.
We have had one major carrier turn up to recover copper connections that are not able to be converted to NBN, disconnecting clients for days or even a week or more before restoration.
We have also had some customers told by their carriers that phone system replacement is necessary in some cases at costs of many thousands of dolars. There are solutions for cutover of lines to NBN for virtually any existing systems, making the customer change is simply scamming.
The basic concept of NBN is a good one, but believing that they could roll out in a few years what took a hundred years with copper was simply stupid and shows how little understanding the government and their advisers have.

I'm in a similar situation as ricktas. The map of NBN roll out shows areas all around us either with it, in the process of getting it, or rollout planned whereas the part of the suburb I'm in... nothing. I mean WHAT THE?

Damned expensive by comparison to many other broadband services, and for that money you'd expect decent services.

After download speeds of around 16Kb/s (yes, you read it right) Telstra whacked in a 4G tower 400m away from my place and I moved into the 20th century.

It often hits 35Mb/s download when there are no kids on-line, and if I put up an external aerial higher than the corrugated iron roof on the house next door it could be much faster. But hey, after 1 Mb per minute download speeds I think I'm in cyber heaven.
I've just booked in to have the NBN box installed as our FTTP switch-on is imminent. Yep, in my little country town we are getting FTTP. I'll wait and see just what the real life speeds are like before I sign up. I may actually then move into the 21st century. :nod:

I have the 25/5 NBN package and I have found its more stable than the adsl2 i had at the rental i was in but i still get lag sometimes with watching Twitch or sometimes Youtube.
i get around 23/4.8 and 6 ping

Hmmm... just had an interesting thought... with the increasing uptake of nbn services, I wonder if there are times when these speed tests are invalid... I mean, if 100 people all happen to attempt the speed test at the same time, and they all have 100mb links, then isnt the host providing the speed test files going to have their bandwidth maxed out, and everyone doing the test will see their slice of the speed test providers bandwidth rather than their own max bandwidth?

Down here in the southern state, in the cities they dug up the streets and put the cabling underground, but in the country they have overhead cabling, not just though the towns and rural areas, but between them too. My mum's town has overhead cabling, and the cabling runs overhead between the towns. First bushfire anywhere along the cable path and out goes all the communication, except mobile phones.
The NBN is a great idea, implemented with as much farce as a British pantomime.

I'm also on Optus cable - and it has been fantastic over the past 15 years. The last couple of months have been a different story. I think they totally oversold the service with their recent "unlimited everything" plans and network congestion is taking a heavy toll. Like you, I usually get 80+ Mb/s but currently am lucky to get 2 Mb/s in the afternoons/evenings. Hopefully they'll sort it out soon.

What modem did they give you.
For the first 15years, I had the crappy old Motorola SB4100.
Very late '13 - early '14, I upped my data allowance plan and with that they sent me a Cisco modem/router, against my request .. even tho they asked me which type do I want.
With that change of modem, I went from a maximum of 20mb/s to just over the 100 mark as shown. That old motorola modem was a piece of junk!

The router i had before was causing drop outs as i think maybe it couldnt handle the speeds. Havent had drop outs since getting this one :)
What modem did they give you.
I have one of their latest Netgear modems now. This is the third one I've had from them over the years, and yes, they've all provided a speed bump. 80Mb/s was fine - and acceptable on a 100Mb/s max speed plan when you remember cable bandwidth gets shared. 2Mb/s on the other hand ...
I'd be happy to get the 30 Mb/s I was getting before they upgraded my speed :lol2:

I also think the netflix factor has affected speeds of late. When you get a heap of people all streaming HD video via their net connection, and there is a limit to total bandwidth being pushed through the pipe at your local exchange, something has to give. Certainly in my area, since netflix began, speeds have reduced at peak times (evenings).
NBN Fibre 100/40 with 'node... It slows down in the evening (now) ... I've had faster results at other times

Cable upload sucks. I run a server from home and also upload stuff (a copy of the site software source etc.) to the AP site. Site maintenance etc.

Thinks that is what we were supposed to get just as the government changed and now there is no mention of it at all for us. If it ever comes, it will be wireless for me, but I don't care. I'm happy with the adsl2 I have now. Any thing is better than the 15 minutes/very basic page I had originally. There are plenty of people around here still on dial up.

Luckily I get 40 Mbs odd through Telstra cable, but I'd quite like to get some alternative options as it's priced according to the other options I have.
Hamster; - a bit more complicated.
Some existing planed areas will get Fibre to the Premises (like me - yay)
The remainder will get
Fibre to the Node (a box down the street) then use copper to the premises
-or- Fixed wireless
-or- An enhanced cable service when the NBN take over T$/Foxsmell cable
The fibre to the node sites can buy fibre to the premises add-on for about $1k

Living in the country has its challengers and internet service is one of them. I have been on ADSL1 up until 3 months ago when the exchange was updated for ADSL2+ and I just happen to be within 1740 cable mtres from the exchange. Until the update I live with an average of 8KB/s. Now I average around the 9MB/s mark which is a luxury and serves me and Foxtel service well enough.
In the earlier days of the NBN rollout we were told we would have NBN connected by 2013 and you could see it laid out on the roll out site. Then we were told it would be Sept 2014, and now there is no details on the site anymore but Telstra say there will be 2016 NBN service here. I expect it will be wireless which will be fine for me in view of the suffering we have lived with for BB speeds the last 8 yrs.
NBN is in the new developments closer to town where urban sprawl has bought up farms and developed distant city suburbs. Since the start of Netflix and the free trial, I have spoken with quite a number who have speed issues at certain times of the day and inquires by some of them seem to put the cause on the sudden increase in Movie service offerings.
I am keen to move to NBN (when ever that may be and is almost certainly going to be wireless, if at all), but I am also hesitant as the speed impact of new movie and TV services etc appears to be mostly impacting the NBN users. Due to density of homes out here in the farming community against the number close enough to the exchange to get ADLS2+, staying on ADSL2+ maybe a better option.
Not having a shot - but it does amuse me when I hear of people (not necessarily on this site) complaining about BB speeds of 15 MB/s etc.

in the house. I'd be getting onto IInet about that. Let them check your line speed if nothing else, and maybe
they'll suggest a modem re-boot. :cool:

That's almost certainly Mbits .. not Mbytes!
I routinely get 100Mb/s 'connection speed' .. but you'd be hard pressed to find any server wiling to give you 9 Megabytes/sec download speed.
AARNET used too(that was my test site), Muckrosoft also do for some things.
And strangely Nikon also used to allow over 10Mbytes/s downloads.
I used to regularly download Nikon's updates to their software and it's consistently come through at 10-11Mbytes/s.
That's 250-300Mbytes of software to your HDD in just a few minutes!
Amazing to watch .. unbeleivable the first time I did it(years ago). I remember starting the download to either a CNX2 or VNX2 update .. and they're usually well over 200MB to download.
Went into the kitchen(about 5 steps from the office) to start a cuppa. Came back to see how the download was going, only to find it 'not happening'.
Checked the download history, and there it was .. said completed :confused013
I was confused .. so I checked that actual file on the HDD. It said 200+ MB or whatever .. I'm still :confused013.
So I downloaded it again! .. just to be sure. And there it was hovering between 10 and 12Mbytes per second! :th3:
The other week when my son yelled out in frustration that this stupid internet is stupid .. what's going on!
I was :confused013 again(again!) .. we were getting around 1-2Mb/s(bits! per sec).
then I started yelling too.
I keep an eye on our speed every now and then out of curiosity .. but my son is my alarm bell(typical 15 yo .. 25 hours a day on those stupid games! :rolleyes:)
But one strange situation I had was interesting to watch.
I purchased a new wireless AP(an AC type, for future compatibility) .. works very well with my tablets 3x3 wireless networking ability for now at least.
But the son's laptop connected via a 1x1 wireless n frequency was achieving 20-ish Mb/s .. sounded pretty normal.
Came into the office and checked my PC, which is Gbit connected to the Gbit router to the rest of the network .. just millimeters from the router and modem .. and I'm getting 2Mb/s !!
Confirmed the slow laptop wireless .. 25 or so Mb/s again .. checked my supposedly Gbit connected PC .. 1.5Mb/s.
Something was about to get hammered .. with a sledge hammer. But my desk is so cluttered with modems/routers/switches/hdds/etc .. I didn't know which one to attack first!

Yep. Top down speed I've seen is about 115 but never seen an up speed higher than 2.5.

I'll tell you after August 22. Had my FTTP box fitted yesterday and apparently it's all set to go in about two weeks, although I won't hold my breath.
Andrew, I wish I could send my Wireless set-up to you as at 4-5Mb/sec download speeds it's not all that shabby, at least after what I put up with for years, similar to your 20th century offerings.
No NBN news on my area anytime soon. Except annoying overseas telemarketers trying to sell me plans on "getting ready for NBN".

I deflect, and cause they always call around dinner time, I thank them for their call and say it is great cause I need some help. Then tell them I am cooking a curry and am unsure whether to add cardamom or not. I never talk to them about what they want to talk about. It is amusing trying to listen to them desperately attempting to get back to their script, when I want to talk about something else entirely.
One particular evening, I even decided that I could not speak Chinglish and spoke to them like the Swedish Chef from the Muppets (sad news about Kermit and Miss Piggy) I got handed from person to person as they tried to work out what language I was speaking.:D

Before I moved to Melbourne, I lived in Midway Point in Tasmania and our suburb was one of the first to get the NBN on fibre optic cable. It beat the crap out of the Telstra broadband service that I was using prior to it being installed and it seemed that it was going to be the way of the future. Unfortunately, a change in government has seen what was originally a step into the future turn into a dogs breakfast. Australia has one of the worst internet speeds and that has been reinforced by the evidence of the Ookla speed tests that people have been posting. I'm on ADSL here in Melbourne but I can't post what the speed is that I get for my service as the Ookla site requires Flash to run it which I have disabled as it has far too many holes in it that hackers can exploit (it's a dead duck anyway because a lot of websites are ditching Flash). In an ideal world, everybody should have access to the same or similar speeds. That certainly won't happen with the 'Frankenstein' internet services that will be rolled out in the coming years. We could have had one of the best internet services in the world but unless there is a committed switch to fibre optic cable, we'll continue to have a service that will be good for some people and not for others.

Just received 3 phone calls from the same call centre:
informing me that NBN is not on my area
informing me that I will be getting a cheaper bill for telephone and internet before NBN in my area (which I insisted I am not changing anything).
informing me that they are not changing anything (which I insisted I am not changing anything, including bill amount).
informing me that I am paying between $100 and $110 per month (which was incorrect).
attempt to get my actual bill amount. (and I refused).
finally admitted that he does not have my information.

(Oh, I didn't watch it, the bits I saw as I flicked through the channels were too [stupid/puerile/sick/jerky.../etc...])
We had a letterbox drop today to say construction on the NBN will start in our street shortly. A few weeks back we weren't even on the short list.
Do I have anything to worry about ?
Eg. where they say we will be digging up footpaths etc. and returning it to something similar :rolleyes: to what it was, whatever that means.

Eg. where they say we will be digging up footpaths etc. and returning it to something similar :rolleyes: to what it was, whatever that means.
They have almost finished the FTTP installation in my town.
First step was to put new pits in, close by the existing pits, then drag the fibre optic cable through the existing piping.
This week I had the connection box installed on my house and they chose not to use the existing entry route and instead dug a new trench. They tidied up reasonably well afterwards.

Just a few details from a recent APC magazine (Australian Personal Computer, July 2015 edition) that are relevant to this topic...
The article is on, p48, called "A 4K Video Primer".
1. It talks about 4K TVs and how there are only Netflix and YouTube that offer any 4K content (in Aus, I guess).
2. There are only a "handful of 4K playback sources" available.
...

But note that for UHD stream from Netflix -
- you need a wired connection (best),
- a connection speed of at least 25Mbps (Megabits, not MB or MegaBytes)
- it downloads 1.9375 MB(ytes this time) per second!!! (This works out at 6975 MB or ~7GBytes/hour:eek: - but check maths).
- so that means you'd need unLTD download for it to be practical.
- if you go down the 4K TV-Netflix path, make sure it is Netflix compatible...

While I didn't much like the previous government ( nor our current one) I think the original proposal for the NBN was one of their better ideas. Yes it costs money, but Netflix is just the start. And most will get NBN Slimline now.
Totally agree with you there.
IMO, Cloud storage is not viable for the average household without decent high speed internet. And once highspeed internet is available, it opens up so many more posibilities.
My new NBN FTTP (the very best of connections) installation is up and running, and to say I'm a little underwhelmed would be a gross understatement.

Ah, the joys of having the latest and greatest technology. My download speeds have dropped about 20% and my upload speeds about 80%. :(
On the plus side (?) I now have a download limit of 100Gb, up from my previous 8Gb, and a landline with free local calls, all for the same cost.
I could have increased my old wireless download speed substantially by fitting an exterior antennae, but as I don't watch on-live videos etc I was reasonably happy with it.
I don't know whether I was expecting too much from the NBN but I was at least expecting a bit better than I had.
And I know I'm still getting heaps better service than many of the previous posters, so I guess I should be thankful.
The big test will come this arvo about 3.30pm when all the schoolkids hit the internet.

So it's happening.
After a bit (read a lot) of haggling, and many mentions of Optus, we agreed on $50.00 pm.

Just off the phone venting my displeasure with the downturn in my internet speeds. I now have 100Mbs down and 40Mbs up, at no extra cost. The squeaky wheel got the grease !! Am, I get free local calls on my included landline, and my mobile takes care of the rest.
I've been a continuous PMG/Telecom/Telstra customer since 1968, so they bloody well should look after me.

Singapore isn't too bad if you get away from the tourist areas. The building of infrastructure in this country is non stop.
Now maybe I'm being overly cynical but....
We've been on the road (Greynomad style) for 3 months and have followed the thread from the road.
Now that we're home and I've caught up with some things I thought I'd check where we stand in the waiting list.
Now, we live in one of the most marginal federal electorates in the Country, so one could think that we'd be up there but no sign. So a little investigation shows that the Towns to the north, south & east of us are all about to get wireless NBN. We're not even on the horizon.
Hmm, now why.... oh, perhaps its got something to do with the fact that our town (pop 6000) has an extremely low socio-economic demographic, and presumably our polling places are about as red as they come, with the smaller wealthier towns far bluer.
A few minutes ago when the neighbouring kidlets are heading for bed - normal afternoon speeds half that and mid evening half again

Just did a speed check and it's close to what was promised. I checked it about 10pm and the download was peaking at around 60Mbps, I suppose the difference being more people were using it.

Just to revive an old thread ------ :D
About 2 months after fixed wireless towers were built to serve our tiny hamlet the NBN site now lists us as "under construction" ------- which is great until you discover that the govt must be going broke and now want new ( selected ) connections to pay a $300.00 fee for the privilege of having a telephone.
So it seems, after a few months of the NBN being available in our area the copper wires will be scrapped and we will no longer have a landline ( necessary in times of storms and fires around here due to flaky mobile service ) we will have to rely on the voip service that comes with the NBN.
Isn't it marvelous that such double dipping on charges occurs when the scheme costs truckloads more that they first thought.
My landline comes down the fibre optic cable. My phone is plugged into the NBN Router/Modem.
Is that VOIP ??

Yep, that works for those who are in an area serviced by fibre to the node, premises or the new tech that they are unveiling but it it simply does not work for the fixed wireless connectees. If they don't sign up to the NBN they simply will not have a phone line in their home that works the "old" way.
And now all those who opt to join the NBN and are in an area designated as new greenfield or brownfield will have to pay $300 for the privilege.
I probably shouldn't post this but after 6 months the speeds are holding up.

When I first had mine connected the speeds were not much different to yours. I rang Telstra and told them that I was not a happy NBN user, and that the speeds were no better than my wireless connection. I also mentioned Optus a few times during the call and was offered a free upgrade to the 'Fast' connection, 100MBs down and 40MBs up, which is pretty much what I now get.
I don't know the techy side of things, but I suspect the fast connection doesn't get choked by traffic like the standard connection probably does.

I'm with Optus cable, have been for over 10 years.
Originally the cable modem they first sent was a useless piece of garbage, and even tho cable can easily achieve 100Mb/s, that old modem could only achieve up to 25Mb/s.
In a sense, I was stuck.
Optus wouldn't send me a new modem 'just because I wanted one' (ie. faster connection!!) and back when I initially connected, the download plan was truly unlimited.
So the person I spoke too, demanding a new modem .. basically forced me to update my very old contract to a new and much more restrictive plan.
But the download speed did skyrocket from 25Mb/s to 100Mb/s immediately when I installed the new modem. :th3:
Turned out that my son's gaming habits took us over the pathetic download limit every month, so I had to up that plan too.
But soon after that(a few years now), Optus offered their customers this stupid movie streaming service (either Stan or Netflix .. can't remember), and for sure that this is the cause for the current slowdowns on the cable service now.
Most nights we struggle to achieve 30-50Mb/s download speeds, as the issue with cable is that we all share the available bandwidth.
And Optus gave all these customers the ability to watch movies now, but obviously hadn't scale up the bandwidth for the cable system in my area .. net result is some 'very slow' internet speeds during the peak periods (when the masses are glued to their movies, all at the same time).
The fastest download speed I've seen on my connection has been a strange 102(ish) Mb/s, which is strange considering that cable is supposedly a 100Mb/s connection.
Uploads are a very tedious 1-2Mb/s connection, but that isn't a bother at all.
So in a sense, the so called fast connection(cable) does get choked when too many folks are using it all concurrently.
The slower ADSL system doesn't.

If you get 0-where with Telstra, go to the telecommunication ombudsman.
You need a good reason and a reasonable outcome, and it will happen.
And a VG reason is if your speeds are slower than they were before NBN.

We can achieve 6 down on an ADSL connection --- except that you have to be on the pc at 3:00 am on a cloudless night with a full moon and no unicorns trampling the exchange fences.

Andrew, you may have inadvertently hit on the source of the problem.
It is quite possible that the winding on the Unicorn's horn may be interfering with the signal from the tower. If, as you say, Unicorns are hanging around the exchanges, their horns are possibly causing the signal from the exchange to spiral in an upward direction, possibly to a hitherto unknown occupied planet, the occupants of which are so transfixed by the chatter on our forum that they have forgotten why they sent the Unicorns here in the first place.

You're both half deranged! You know nothing of unicorns(which is a silly name when you think about it .. why would they be named after a single solitary clump of maze seeds?)
anyhow! I have the low down on unicorns .. from an ex unicorn expert too mind you.
Apparently they scare off beastly types, and I reckon the speed issues experienced by sufferers of insufficient network speeds are not, in fact, due to the unicorns but more so from the beasts they are there to protect you from. That is, they're presence there actually eliminates the internet from stopping altogether!
I'm hearing that the most likely culprit that causes this speed reducing stuff may be something like a centaur to something .. some half man half animal type construction(of the mind) that is supposedly hard to see/catch/comprehend .. and only unicorns can do this(or that .. or whatever).
So the poor old unicorn, once again, being blamed for stuff it didn't do .. and only because it was seen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time!

NBN all working fine in Modbury North SA. Only picked the lowest speed available on Telstra, and lost a bit of GB allowance. The speed is still way faster than my old Cable system.
Only glitch is that my work Laptop has Citrix VPN and it clashes with the ISP IPv4 address and will not connect.

I would have expected the "lowest speed" NBN to be about the same as for cable.
I understand 25Mbit/sec down for NBN, and 30 Mbit/sec for cable. The Upload speed is
often quoted as being higher for NBN than for cable.
Yet you're saying that the NBN at the "lowest speed" is much faster than cable.
Mine is cable 30/1.8, with Optus. I hope their NBN is "worth it" eventually.

Cable speed for SA was always much different than some areas of NSW, well compared to my area anyway. Telstra always had an "out" clause of "up to" speeds. Both Up/Down speeds are noticeably faster on NBN for my area and plan anyway.

I have Telstra Ultimate cable. I almost always get around 113 Mbps down, but a truly miserable 2.56 Mbps upload ... Hardware limitations of the existing HFC servers (early 1990s), I am led to believe.

I look like finally getting on board in the next three months.
Fixed Wireless with Telstra (no other service providers in the area) giving me 1000gb for $115.
Currently I'm using a Mobile Wireless USB modem over a Dovodo wireless router for ... wait for it.... $175 a month for ...wait again... 25Gb. Boom. NO ADSL at the local exchange, so that's the only option.
Anyway, better days ahead.

The small town i live in is a non NBN island surrounded by wireless service but there is no date on when my place will get it. I dont know why they couldnt of connected my town when the entire shire surrounding it bar the main town 5min away is hooked up. It's very frustrating!

If you actually watched the NBN contractors working you would readily understand how & why it is taking this long and costing this much. Some of the contractors in our area September/ November 2015 - I had no less the 4 separate visits to view access onto our site - our area is all underground services - 2 stated they would need to directionally drill a new hole and feed new pipes and cables into house. One wanted to cut into newly laid concrete paths/ driveway to install new pipes etc, I shook my head each time. Finally when they left the area and it was left up to me to contact Telstra contractor who looked at the new pit I had installed in 2012 and said easy we will use this. A week later he was back with a mate and roof cabling all fitted out to street in under 2 hours. Meanwhile 4 other houses within viewing distance had 5-6 guys directional drill fresh new holes and spent days on site for each house. I'm sure all they wanted was what gave them the best $ income for their company.
After nearly one year from starting this thread and over the last month or so the NBN has arrived here.
Mind you, the first trained monkeys skilled technicians who came to install it turned up without a ladder or a bracket to mount the antenna so it was rebooked for 20 days later. Then on Monday another skilled technician turned up but it was raining heavily and the job could not go ahead.
It was then scheduled for installation on the 4th of July but after a few phone calls questioning a few peoples ancestry it was finally installed today.
For people like us in rural areas it is simply staggering to be able to view web content so quickly. :eek:

It's a bit staggering for me too on the rare occasions I manage similar figures, and I'm on Telstra cable and in suburban Sydney. Meanwhile the status of the NBN on our area is approximately "just forget about it".
My mobile phone performs much better.

When Telstra offered me 25/5 I kept mentioning Optus and how good their plans were and finished up with 100/40 with speed boost for the same money. After the 1MB per minute downloads I put up with for fifteen years I didn't feel at all bad about putting the squeeze on them.

NBN has been pretty awful here for the past week or so.
Almost every second URL I try I end up with a "Connection closed by remote server", and speeds quite erratic as well.
Going on the service of the past week or so, our previous ADSL service was much more consistent.

The NBN have dug holes near my place and put down pits with the words NBN on the concrete covers. Apparently I live in high fire risk area, so it's all going underground. I might be lucky and get connected about 2018.
Our suburb was connected to FTTN a couple of months ago.
Paid for 25/5 and most of the time we get it.

They have dug holes? You lucky man. I dream about our suburb one day being even mentioned on the NBN website. Just one of the many issues about living in a "safe" electoral seat for a major party, I suppose. Hawthy, I don't think its the safeness of your electorate that counts.
We live in a seat that is always one of the most marginal electorates in the country and there are areas in our electorate that are getting the nbn.
But, the places that are getting it are "blue" polling places. Our town is very "Red" and we are so far away they'd have to use the Hubble to find us on the list, let alone radar.

We were among the first suburbs here to get FTTN.
Dunno if electorate has any influence but our seat has been Liberal for decades and don't see it changing.

AFAICT, areas with no broadband access, or very substandard access are tending to get priority treatment.
IMHO, that's fair enough too. We probably won't see the NBN here in my lifetime, but we already get 116 Mbps down (but a miserable 2.55 Mbps up ... ), so we are not hard done by! Top Telstra cable plan.
My brother is on ADSL and is lucky to get 8/1 Mbps - outer suburb of Brisbane. Areas like his, or areas without any access, should get some sort of proper service before we get upgraded.

Had it since Nov 2015 - has worked fine. Certainly more stable than Windows 10 has been for the past week since the Anniversary updates were issued.
