Hi to All,
Years ago I had a Canon AE1 Program that I really loved, but I only really scraped the surface in terms of gaining photographic skills.
I bought a Canon Powershot SX230 HS while on holidays in France a few years back and I have used it for happy snaps etc - great little camera but I know I am not using anywhere near its potential. On holiday in Vietnam a few weeks back my dormant thoughts about progressing past the tip of the photography iceberg were re-awakened when we were joined on a tour of the Mekong by a couple from Singapore producing great shots on their Nikon DSLRs. After the holidays, I did some research and bought a Canon EOS 70D with an 18-135mm kit lens.
I found your website and while it looks overwhelming, it also looks like a great resource to learn from. I live in Adelaide, and will also look at joining a local camera club.
In summary, I am a beginner but have some basic background.
I want to learn about landscape, portrait and getting great shots of my five year old granddaughter.
I am not sure where to start with post processing, so I am keen for suggestions on where to start on this aspect.
Regards, Philpy

Welcome to the forums, you're in good hands here.

Post processing, if you were starting out for the first time, I would say even Microsoft Office Picture Manager is a great way to start - for quick cropping, resizing, colour fixing (even if it's done using the auto function), mainly just to get your head on the fact that post processing is fixing and fine tuning the pictures.

When you're comfortable with doing these things, any image editing tool will be good - I use Photoshop myself, just used to that. Many others use Lightroom. But if you don't want to spend the money just yet getting the programs and want a way to practice, get an understanding of really editing your photos now, GIMP is a nice free solution - though I hate personally hate its interface myself, my sister uses it and she likes it.

For you photos, post them up in the CC section as Kym mentioned, and everyone's more than happy to provide tips and pointers to help you :)

Any questions, ask them away :)

Hi Phil and Welcome to AP.. Sounds like a great plan especially if you have a young Granddaughter .
Good advice up top, you can also do some pp with Digital Photo Professional aka DPP comes with your camera for processing your RAW images to jpeg.
Will look forward to seeing what you post on the Forums.
