Hi all,

My name is Amelia, I am fairly new to photography. I decided I was going to become a good photographer about a 18 months ago when I found out I was expecting my first baby. My husband has had an interest in photography for sometime, so luckily I can just use his camera.

I started by reading a few books (From snapshots to great shots Nikon D5100, Don't say cheese by Mary Ashley, Your baby in pictures by Me Rah Koh).

And I've been practicing taking photos of my baby boy since he was born in August.

I am now starting to feel ready to take the next step and start getting some constructive criticism of my images to help me improve. I'm also planning on working my way through the beginners photography book on this site.

I've got a long way to go yet, but hopefully with the help of this forum I will gradually reach my goal of being a 'good photographer'. This is a hobby only for me, I have a good job and never intend to do photography as anything other than a hobby and way to preserve my family's memories.

The gear I currently own is a Nikon D5100 camera, a 35mm f1.8 prime lens, a 50mm f1.4 prime lens (in the post - it hasn't arrived yet), a 40mm Micro lens, a 18-105mm kit zoom lens. Top on my wishlist at the moment is the Nikon 70-200mm f2.2G lens, but it will be a while before I buy this lens, I may end up buying another prime (the 85mm f1.8) prior to the telephoto zoom for financial reasons.

Here is a link to a photo I have taken recently of my son

Can someone tell me if I have managed to link that correctly?

Welcome Amelia

As mentioned above, you won't get any CC in this forum, but if you post your picture to something like the family (http://www.ausphotography.net.au/forum/forumdisplay.php?127-Family) section, you'll get some pretty good feedback.

Good luck on you new journey. Remember that no one (or very few people I know) are naturally good photographers. You can have a good eye, but mastering the equipment takes skill and that comes through training. If you spend time getting to know the basics, you'll be surprised how quickly you progress.

G'day Amelia.
like your intro. If we start humble and and have achievable goals, we can surpass our expectations. Better than being disappointed. (that sounds like rubbish):)
As Mary Anne mentioned, don't be afraid to comment on others photos. Helps you think about your own photos (believe it or not).
Hope you get involved and learn here on AP.:th3:

Thanks all for the welcoming messages.

I've posted my first photo on the beginners cc forum :-)

Still just looking at other peoples photos rather than commenting just yet, but I'll get there in a few days to weeks :-)

Tomorrow I have a friend and her twins visiting, looking forward to trying to get some good pics of the babies playing together.

Happy snapping everyone.
