Recommendations for a compact camera

Anyone have any models that they can suggest for me to have a read up on?

I'd like it to be relatively small, zoom, 'ok' macro ability and pretty much turn it on, take a photo and turn it back off.

Done a little searching, but the variety is literally staggering.

what about a mirrorless m4/3 type 'compact'.

of course they're not compact in the Canon S series cameras, but they're more compact than your average DSLR.

Then they have the option to mount various lens types too ... of which there are plenty available.

Panasonic have an incredibly small m4/3 available in the DMC-GM1 (http://www.dpreview.com/articles/5355550938/dpreview-gear-of-the-year-part-2-panasonic-lumix-dmc-gm1)(link to DPR's review)

Also, Fuji have their X series compacts, either with or without the ability to change lenses to. eg, XE-1 is interchangeable .. X100 is fixed lens.


If these don't appeal and you want a truly compact pocketable camera, Canon G series is also one to look for(I think G16 is the latest incarnation). Lots of manual controls and stuff .. and very high quality build.

What assort of budget do you have?

There is a huge assortment of makes and models out there ranging form a $49 special to many thousands of $$$$$.

The Canon G16 is highly regarded and takes great photos, even in full auto.
It will last a long time too as it is very solidly built.

I ended up with a Canon Powershot SX280HS that the retailers are listing for $350.00 after some discounting and Canon rebates, I walked out the door with it for $220.00

It zooms to 500mm, does macro superbly and it's just fantastic because it slips into my top pocket.

I'll start posting photos again as soon as the house reno's and Christmas is over.

no built in flash,
the adapter option allows the EF / EL lenses to be mounted.
Slow focus, but can be improved with new software... is there
