I found this tonight while I was trawling ebay.

Now that is a serious bit of kit!! There couldn't be too many of these things floating around but what a price. Imaging taking it out in public!!

It is a very well known extremely rare and well regarded lens.

A couple of the things with the ebay ad are a little strange to me though. The ad title states that it is "WORLD'S WIDEST PROFFESIONAL LENS FOR SLR" which is rather strange as Sigma make a wider lens at 12mm. Maybe the seller either thinks that either Sigma lenses are never to be used by professionals or they mean that it is the widest 35mm format rectilinear lens made by Nikon. Either way, they totally messed up the spelling of professional. :D

Secondly, have a look at the serial number on the lens in the ad. It does not appear to have enough numbers in it to match up with the sequence listed by Roland Vink on his pages http://www.photosynthesis.co.nz/nikon/lenses.html and the image samples all appear to have an extra two numbers http://www.photosynthesis.co.nz/nikon/ai1356.html

If you have a look at the middle image in the top row of thumbnails in the ad and then view the full size image it almost appears that the end of the serial number has been "shopped" out. Why would that be?

What sounds alarm bells for me in this ad is the note at the end of the description that payment is by direct deposit only!
I'm guessing that this account is based in the Cayman Islands and that the seller is a reverend of some charitable religious foundation based in Nigeria! ;)

An even more interesting listing on ebay recently was the broken 2000/11 monster lens.

Had to re read that listing a few times, to confirm that 1. it was broken. 2. that it wasn't a joke. 3. that it was definitely broken!

Broken mount, missing pieces .. basically a piece of junk ... probably not even good for parts .. and they wanted US$25K for it :confused:

Would it be a very workable scam? If you were going to buy a $50,000 used lens, would you not be mad to have it delivered by standard international shipping? Wouldn't you invest a few extra dollars in a plane ticket and come down to get your hands around it?

I'm wondering how it would handle on the Df?

Apparently the Df is perfectly designed to handle prime lenses, but I have a sneaking suspicion that this one may feel a touch front heavy on the Df :p

Not too sure as to how/why/what with respect to paypal and ebay, but I had a quick lookup of the seller and he seems to be quite legit. So I'd feel confident that this isn't a scam.

.... just one hell of a very expensive lens!
