This is way off topic but if you have an interest in mathematics is quite interesting.

The article below explains (simply, well as simple as possible) how encryption currently works on the 'net and also how the next generation of encryption works.

Nah, he wasn't. Several years back now (in 2009), we held a competition on the site to design a new banner, the one we use today was the winner of that competition.

The binary says 'Ausphotography'. The photos are those of members from back in 2009 and covered a wide range of genre. The 'filmstrip' finished with the red green blue pixel swirl of digital. The leaf logo was present as part of the site from day one, and we wanted to keep that as part of the new logo.

The NSA can read most encrypted communications today.

That is one benefit of the elliptical curve crypto; it will be much harder to break, even with more compute power.

In the kiddies codes we used to make up as children - running the alphabet backwards alongside the alphabet the correct way, and using that to switch the letters, the giveaway was always things like the letter that appeared most often in a coded message was probably the letter 'e' so you could work from that. You could then look for single letter words, that was probably "I" or "a" etc etc.

I've always had a theory that you could take two identical books, give one to your recipient as the "key" and then code your message by using the 2 digit page number, 2 digit line number, and 2 digit character number, for everything - EVEN the punctuation - so that you could have several thousand options as to a code to use for the letter 'e' and you could break up the message into identical length strings of say 9-12 numbers, so there is nothing to give away short or long words, and since you're encoding the punctuation and the spaces in as well, the decoded message would still come across perfectly intelligible, you'd just have to undo the divisions into the 9 or 12 character groups.
This isn't really anything like the mathematical encryption above, but I suspect that without the original "key" book to work from that it would actually be quite hard to break. But I'm no security expert, and certainly no cryptographer, so I may be wrong, but my gut instinct is that it would be almost impossible without the key.

Even if the computer trying to break it could access an electronic copy of every book on the planet just to try breaking it by force by trying every book, the electronic copies would likely have different page numbers to the copies we own. But just to be sure, you could even simply add an extra encryption in, by perhaps adding or subtracting a known figure from the page number every X number of characters, so just throwing every known book on the planet at your result, still wouldn't crack it. Anyway.

Just my theory. Now I've put it out there, I'm sure the NSA will sneak into my house tonight and take note of every single book I own, ready for when I start posting up here using my own special code. It could limit the feedback I get just a little though if I do.

hehehe. When I call someone and get that 'your message will be converted to text'.. I speak gobbledegook to it. It is bad enough when you try and decipher what it means when they speak real words, but I play with it. I often get calls from friends saying 'what the hell was that message about'.:rolleyes:
