Is there a name for the flash accessory that allows you to connect a dedicated external flash to a stand. The stands come as they are, but I imagine you need an accessory to enable you to connect to the flash onto the stand, just not clear on what they are called?

I use the little bracket that came with my flash unit..
Available from your friendly site sponsor Protog, a selection of flash mounts (http://protog.com.au/strobist-equipment-c-74.html).
I'd call it a "speedlight bracket" or "cold-shoe"...
The type depends a bit on what you want to be able to do. Stands (from memory) usually come with a spigot which has a screw thread which should (?) fit the little stand that came with your flash (as Koko mentioned), or you could just buy a threaded cold-shoe to fit. However these won't give you the ability to tilt your flash head down. As per Andrew's link there are plenty of options that will allow more flexibility if you need it.
If you are looking to get a softbox that is specifically built for a speedlight they usually come with an L-shaped bracket with a cold-shoe to hold the flash. (But you'd need to check if they also come with a 'swivel' part to allow them to tilt).
There are also other L-shaped brackets which have a speedlight cold-shoe at one end and a softbox mount at the other end that suits a particular mount-type (eg Bowens, Elinchrom). This (I would assume) gives you access to a wider range of light modifiers and may be a better idea if you might want to move to studio strobes in the future.
Cheers.

Do all umbrealla/flash brackets fit onto tripod light stands? I notice that some manufactues such as Manfrotto only do light stands but not bracket accessories.
I'm about to buy a Manfrotto 026 Lite Tite Swivel + Umbrella Adapter to go with my 1052BAC along with a Cold-Shoe it will hopefully give me a good inside light stand for my SB700 and a smallish shoot through umbrella.

Yes, Ving. That's pretty close to what I mean, but technically, yours is a taped duck.
