Early Birthday Present

My mum surprised me yesterday by buying my a Canon 50mm f/1.8 lens! Pretty happy with it already and can't wait to really get stuck into what this little lens can do!

From what I can see with those shots your on a winner,my Nikon 50mm takes super shots and a really great pano lens.

I have just finished reading "new to photography" on this site, and I felt the consensus was "no filters". Am I wrong?

Hi Jan, filters can be used to achieve a wide range of effects, depending on what you want to achieve ie: longer shutter, cut out glare etc. I'm not totally sure (because I haven't read the "new to photography" book in a while) but I'm fairly certainly it tells you how your camera works etc at a basic level? I predominately use graduated filters and neutral density filters as I shoot a lot of landscapes.

How about a step-up ring? I've pretty much settled on 52mm filters and step-up rings for the smaller lenses.

Would you get any problems with vignetting? And I suppose you could fit your lens cap/hood on unless you had the larger size?

Don't you get the filter for your largest lens and use step down(up) rings? Should work, though ask in gear talk forum, 'spose.
