Hello, lens help

Hi there, I just ordered a Canon 5D Mkiii with the 24-70mm lens....

Ive been doing a bit of research over the net as to which other lenses i should purchase?

Im going travelling around the world around may this year, and would like a good set of lenses and gear to keep me happy.

I enjoy all types of photography but have mainly focused on landscape, sunrise/ sunsets, macro and astrophotography...

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

use the 24-70 and learn how to make your camera work for you. 24-70 is a good range

Also if your into Sunrise /Sunsets the 17-40 is good on the full frame MKIII , 17mm is equal to roughly 10mm on a crop sensor , Nice and wide :)

I've heard the 17-40mm is good for full frame too for landscapes. I would definitely want wider when travelling, I'm thinking cathedrals, beachscapes etc.

the 17-40 I owed seemed bullet proof, definately a lens worthy of travel, I took in in pouring rain, the beach with salt spray, waterfalls where it would get water all over it and still lived on.
With the 24-70 i would add maybe a fast 50mm or 35mm, (50 1.4, 35mm 1.4).
For a compact tele lens maybe the 200 f/2.8 with a set of extension tubes for macro purposes.

Given the gear you've just purchased, it's going to depend on what sort of landscapes you want. I feel a F2.8 over a F4 would be the go, so a 16 (http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-16-35mm-f-2.8-L-II-USM-Lens-Review.aspx) - 35mm F2.8 You'll be able to get all those wide shots for landscapes (See Xenedis work for some great examples) also for faster glass for architectural - indoors work and Astro work, as it's F2.8

One the other hand, the 70 (http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-70-200mm-f-2.8-L-IS-II-USM-Lens-Review.aspx) - 200 F2.8 (or F4 for weight) would be a great choice.

You need to decide what focal length you want to use/work in. As Rick has mentioned, 24 - 70 mm F2.8 Or the new F4 is a great lens and a very favorable focal length.

How much do you have to spend? As the lens mentioned above, will last a life time, but cost as much as a round the world air fare.

Choices. Buy the best glass you can afford - it will last - and you'll only waste your money if you buy inferior glass and then upgrade again at a later date. Believe me, and all the others that have made the same choice.

Have you thought about a good tripod and head, rather than a new/second lens? Get the most out of the lens/body combo you have, as you can always pick up bargains around the world.
